"Clearly Recovering" Fidel in New Video on Cuban TV

Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit

[There is no joy in Gusano Land... The mighty Castro won't check out.

On the way home from Angola, Hugo Chavez made his third visit to Fidel since
Castro's surgery. The visit resulted in a new video that will dash hopes in
Miami and probably will prompt more bilge and quotes from Brian Latell, et
al.

Reuters (Story #1) reports Fidel is talking animatedly and sitting at a desk
or small table, wearing red PJs. AP (Story #2) says he is in his "sickbed"
dressed in a "red gown." Both stories are datelined Havana. Maybe it's those
Red Chinese TVs playing tricks on the mainstream press. A longer story
from AP (#3) was filed from Caracas and quotes Chaves.-NY Transfer]

Video shows recovering Castro with Chavez

HAVANA (Reuters) - A clearly recovering Cuban President Fidel Castro was
shown on television on Friday meeting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
and brother Raul Castro, to whom he temporarily ceded power a month ago to
have abdominal surgery.

Castro appeared much stronger than when he was last seen on in a video on
August 13, when his ally Chavez visited him to celebrate his 80th birthday.

On Friday Castro, wearing red pajamas, was seen sitting at a small table
talking animatedly with Chavez. On August 13, Castro was shown in bed and
covered with a blanket.

Castro temporarily handed over power to his younger brother and Defense
Minister Raul Castro July 31 to undergo surgery for intestinal bleeding.

Castro appears improved on state TV

Associated Press

HAVANA - Cuban leader Fidel Castro, looking notably better than he did when
last seen almost three weeks ago, happily greeted Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez during a brief visit aired on state television Friday.

"What joy!" the 80-year-old Castro said, sitting up on his sickbed as Chavez
entered the room where he is recuperating. "A million thanks!"

Wearing a red hospital gown, Castro appeared much more animated and alert
than when Chavez visited him Aug. 13 on his 80th birthday.

Venezuela's Chavez says he visited Castro again,
Cuban leader recovering well

The Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Friday that his
ailing ally, Cuban President Fidel Castro, was recovering well after
intestinal surgery that prompted him to turn power over to his brother a
month ago.

"Fidel has recovered very much from the illness that he has been
suffering," said Chavez, who capped off a foreign tour of four countries on
Thursday evening by making his third visit to the communist-led island in
three weeks.

Thousands of supporters in a downtown plaza gave Chavez a hero's welcome
home and cheered when he wished the 80-year-old Cuban leader a speedy
recovery.

"We finished the tour there in Cuba, where we woke up this morning to make
a visit to our friend and comrade Fidel Castro," said Chavez, who said he
talked with Castro and his brother, Raul, for more than two hours analyzing
the "world situation."

"Fidel -- onward comrade, onward comrade, so that we may continue pushing
up the sun that brings the daybreak," Chavez told the crowd of supporters.

Chavez has kept close tabs on Castro's health since the Cuban leader
underwent surgery and temporarily handed over presidential power to his
younger brother Raul on July 31.

Chavez visited Castro in Havana to mark his birthday on Aug. 13 and
returned in late August before leaving to visit China, Malaysia, Syria and
Angola.

The specifics of Castro's ailment and the nature of his surgery have been
treated as a state secret.
