* More Fertilizers for Cuban Agriculture

In an effort to increase the availability of fertilizers for Cuban
agriculture, a plant in central Matanzas province has increased its local
yield of that product.

Know as Rayoncito, the plant began the production of 46,000 tons of
granulated and mixed fertilizers this month, following newly scheduled
shipments of raw materials needed for such production.

The fertilizers produced by the Matanzas plant are used in different
plantations around the island, especially in potatoes and tobacco.

* Cubans Protect Urban Gardens from Hurricanes

Cuban urban agriculture workers have implemented a protection program
against hurricanes to keep their 3,420 organic urban gardens safe in case
the island is hit this season.

National Urban Agriculture Program secretary Nelso Companioni, said the
program is being implemented in different stages declared by the Civil
Defense authorities in the face of a hurricane.

In all cases seed beds and planted crops are protected by side walls, which
work as barriers in case of intense rains. Also included is a drainage
system to be operated in intensive urban gardens, an urban agriculture
modality practiced in some 6,806 areas on the island.

On the other hand, there are half a million areas in home backyards and
other formerly idle plots in cities and towns which are better protected
since they are located among buildings and other constructions, the expert
said.

Some indications to follow in order to protect urban gardens include the
permanent availability of seeds, organic fertilizers, biological control
means and animal feed, Companioni pointed out and went on to explain that
in case of a hurricane watch a special working system should be implemented
in every agricultural area, and that includes activities such as intensive
collection of produce, and the rapid transfer of domestic animals to safe
places, among other measures.

* Sugar Cane Workers Prepare for Winter Campaign

Sugar cane farmers in eastern Las Tunas province are hard at work cleaning
every piece of land to get ready by next month to kick off the winter
planting season.

Some 1,765 hectares of land are to be planted in the eastern territory with
sugar cane, 50 percent of those lands is almost ready to receive the seeds.
The planting season is part of agricultural activities scheduled for the
second half of the year in the sugar sector.

Along with the preparation of lands in Las Tunas, some 670 kilometers from
Havana, sugar workers have also launched a weeding campaign to have some
17,000 hectares of lands planted with sugar cane clear of weeds by the end
of August.

* Sand Processing Plant Remodelled in Eastern Cuba

A sand-processing plant in eastern Ciego de Avila province has been
remodelled with modern technology, which allows for better working
conditions and a new corporative image.

One of its kind on the island, the Nguyen Van Troi plant in the eastern
part of the country under the jurisdiction of the Cuban Industry of
Construction Materials and its products are used in ongoing construction
programs in eastern Ciego de Avila province and in other Cuban provinces.

The new technology, purchased in Spain, also allows for what is known as
cleaner productions, meaning the combination of production efficiency and
environmental protection. The initiative includes, among other things, the
recycling of water and other wastes to avoid environmental pollution,
particularly of nearby water courses.

The plant, with a production capacity of 60 cubic meters of sand per hour,
is now ready to further expand operations in the processing of other
construction materials like granite and gravels to further increase the
availability of other construction elements.

* Cuba Boosts Its Buffalo Herds

Cuban ranchers are steadily increasing Buffalo herds especially in the
eastern province of Camaguey.

Herds in the eastern territory have been calculated at more than 1,940
according to local news reports. Buffalo milk production is expected to
increase up to 180,000 liters by the end of the year.

In other Cuban provinces, like Matanzas, buffalo are being raised in an
effort to boost economical and sustainable livestock development. The local
buffalo-raising project is being developed and supported by the Ministry of
Sugar, the Cuban Association of Animal Production and the Ministry of
Science, Technology and the Environment.
