Alleged Cuban Spy Says FBI Promised Immunity
Carlos Alvarez And His Wife Elsa Are Being Tried For Spying
Both Were Employees At FIU

(CBS4/AP) MIAMI An FIU Professor accused of spying for Cuban interests
in the United States went before a judge Thursday, as his attorneys
hoped to get his confession to the FBI thrown out in the case.

Carlos Alvarez testified at a hearing on his motion to throw out his
purported confession as evidence. The motion contends that the FBI
agents made promises of immunity from prosecution and that he also had
no real choice in deciding whether to speak with them.

Alvarez did not specifically admit today that he or his wife were Cuban
intelligence agents as alleged by prosecutors. They have pleaded not
guilty to the charges and face trial in early 2007.

Alvarez and his wife, Elsa, are charged with failing to register as
Cuban agents with the US government. Prosecutors say they spied for
President Fidel Castro's government for decades, mainly reporting on
activities of Cuban-American exile groups in Miami and on U-S political
affairs. Both have pleaded not guilty.
