Millions of Hearts Will Beat for Fernando

Tomorrow, one of the five Cuban political prisoners incarcerated in the US
for fighting terrorism will celebrate his 43rd birthday. This individual,
Fernando Gonzalez Llort, is a brilliant professional who graduated with the
highest distinctions in 1987 from the School of International Political
Relations in Havana. Later, after assuming the name Ruben Campa, he
infiltrated terrorist groups based in Miami.

The aim of his mission was altruistic and humanitarian. No one will ever be
able to calculate how many lives were saved among the island's population,
and even within the US itself, thanks to the information supplied to the
Cuban government about criminal activities.

Neither Fernando nor his companeros Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez, Ramon
Labanino or Gerardo Hernandez acted against the interests of US national
security, as they were charged. No proof of this was ever given, despite
the prosecutor's manipulation of facts throughout the long trial in southern
Florida.

This coming September 12, Fernando will have completed eight of the 18 years
in prison that he was sentenced to for a crime that he did not commit. This,
despite the fact that on May 27, 2001, the UN Working Group of Arbitrary
Detentions called the Miami trial arbitrary, while on August 9, 2005 a
three-member panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta annulled
the five's sentences. The UN group of experts determined 15 months ago that
the arrest was arbitrary, and recommended the White House address the
situation. The Atlanta court, in a 93-page document, announced a year ago
that the sentences were annulled.

These two groups of experts on the matter were not contaminated by the
atmosphere of political hostility in Miami against the accused. Both groups
studied the case and in both cases pronounced themselves in favour of the
men's release. This situation makes the case even more unjust, because
following the Atlanta decision, Fernando and his comrades were legally and
technically not convicted and should have been released. It was not just to
keep them in prison waiting --without a time limit-- for the full panel of
judges in Atlanta to make their decision.

Meanwhile, the just cause of the Five gains sympathy around the world -
including in the United States, where solidarity with the case continues to
grow among those who seek to live in a peaceful and just world.

The hearts of 11 million Cubans will be beating on August 18 with hope for
the best for Fernando and his comrades; other voices will join them with the
conviction that the Cuban Five will return to their homeland.
