Got the gig, gear report

Steve Freides

8/17/2011 6:52:00 PM

I'll be playing Sunday brunch, noon to 2 PM, at Sook Pastry, on South
Broad Street near the train station in lovely Ridgewood, NJ (a 5-10
minute walk from my house). My first official performance, after a 2
hour tryout last Sunday night, will be this coming Sunday.

The pay is low but I figure that, since I've been doing this in my
living room for my own entertainment and not getting paid for it,
following in Andrew Schulman's footsteps (granted I'll be quite a few
steps behind) should be a treat for me. The last time I played
classical guitar for an audience was in a faculty concert at the
community college about 7 or 8 years ago, and before that was probably
some time in the 1970's. Just doing this will be fun, and getting paid
a little for it will be a bonus.

The pastries are to die for at this place, they make great coffee and
coffee drinks (e.g., lattes). I had two savory crepes for dinner after
I played last Sunday - also very good, although I think the sweets are
what the place is really about.

My Hippner (purchased from r.m.c.g.'er Richard Sayage, and the same
brand Andrew plays) is at shop of luthier Allen Watsky in Leonia, NJ,
getting a K&K Pure Classic and Pre-Phase preamp installed. It's a
Hauser style guitar, which means it's on the small side, and that suits
me because I'm also on the small side. My amplifier will be an Acoustic
Image Ten2, a newer model from the same company that makes the Contra
and Coda that Andrew plays.

Anyone in the area on a Sunday is cordially invited to stop by! It's
about 15 minutes by car from the George Washington Bridge into upper
NYC.

Tips can be more than your pay and connection can be even better.
The repertoire is not the same but like concertizing you get to play
the same stuff over and over which is when you really learn to play
it. The schmooze factor can be a big factor in your success so playing
things people recognize is very important.

Welcome to the CG gig club.

That's great Steve!

You're going to have a lot of fun doing this, it will pick up your
playing by being out there, and you'll need to go to the gym a little
more often because of the pastries!

All best on the new gig,

Andrew

Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes. I played for over 2 hours last
week at the cafe, and the encouraging thing was that I got better the
more I played - I noticed it and so did my wife.

Andrew, I'm following Allen's recommendation since he's just back in
town, and going with a K&K Pure Classic plus their mini preamp that
mounts inside the guitar. It's more $$ but I hope it's worth it - I was
listening to the cedar 8-string tonight when John brought it over, and I
hooked it up to my AI setup - still sounds great.
