Does cicada noise bother your hearing?

edspyhill01

Here in S.E. Pennsylvania the cicadas are in full concert. If I sit out on
my deck or sit with the back door open the sound really dulls my hearing.
It seems to be a high frequency sound that makes my ears feel as if I've
been to a medium volume rock concert. Anybody else experience this problem?

I haven't heard the cicadas yet--. I've been conditioned to think of
their sound as melancholy, not so much for their brief time on earth as
adults. Back to my childhood, I associate them with the impending end
of summer vacation.
No, I seldom find the noise uncomfortably loud.

I've never heard a cicada - we don't have those critters. It is
interesting the you find their sound to be fatiguing. Areas of the big
island have been invaded by the the tiny coquí frog. The sound of their
calls is driving some folks nutty.

The other night, my brother in law from the mainland was startled when
he heard a clucking sound coming from the window. "What the heck is
that?!" I told him it was a gecko. Nothing to be alarmed at. They like
to hang around window screens because the house lights at night attracts
delicious bugs.

Where in S.E. Pennsylvania? I grew up near West Chester and we didn't
have any cicada-related hearing problems there.

Maybe they are locusts. Whatever they are, they sound like crickets on
meth. I live between Montgomeryville and Doylestown, Pa. I'll record the
little bastards.

I think the coqui must be similar to what I heard in Bermuda. They
sounded a lot like crickets to me, but hugh numbers of crickets!

I don't remember you saying you'd grown up there. Nice area. We used
to ride up there with my bicycle club--had a regular trip on Columbus
Day weekend--usually stayed in Chadds Ford.

West Chester is about 40 miles west of where I'm at now. I grew up in a row
house in South Philly until I was 18, then joined the Air Force for 4 years.
I moved to Northeast Philly in 1970 until 1996, when I moved to Chalfont.
Central Bucks is a nice area, but too many SUVs driven by people who seem to
be afraid of them.

The local folks are afraid of these cute little critters just because
they make a little noise. The problem is bad on the big island but here
on urbanized Oahu, I doubt we'll even notice.

I used to live on Kapiolani Blvd which is one of the busiest street on
Oahu. I slept like a baby. The first night that we slept in our new
apartment in Washington State was kinda tough because it was dead silent
at night. There was nothing. Beats the heck out of me why there was no
sound. The only thing I heard was constant ring of my tinnitus. Dead
silence is not good for a guy with tinnitus!

Bad combination. We have friends in the Poconos (near Hawley), and they
(and most others) have convinced themselves they need SUVs. They can
make a case (they get far more snow than we do), but when they're
driving and I'm in the car I usually get sick.

Never thought of that. Wonder if a white noise generator would have
helped.
