thoughts from being away

11/30/2015 2:51:00 PM

so in a moment of weakness I took advantage of the Black Friday deal and purchased Warlords. I should preface to say that my last serious wow playing was killing the Lich King. For Cat, I leveled up my main for a month and then stopped and for Panda I've only ever taken advantage of 7 or 10 day free trials to quickly level up via instances.

A few months ago I was able to get through the Warlord introduction and start my garrison and had to stop as I could not ding 91.

But now I'm in for a 3 months as I was intrigued by the garrisons but I'm a bit confused.

Professions: I'm a leatherworker but it seems very daunting to try and level it up as the amount of materials needed (and time to farm) is extraordinary. I was expecting as per past to gather enough materials while questing to at least make a dent in leveling up but most of the mobs are not skinnable.

The garrison: what seemed interesting at first has really turned into a time and money sink. I dinged 100 and have a few level 2 buildings. The routine when you log in takes almost a half hour and is super expensive. I know money comes easy and it should now that I'm max level and still have 3 zones to explore but the time sink to keep up your garrison vs. exploration doesn't allow for a casual experience.

Instances. gear level caps to run the instances? I was level 99 and couldn't get into Skyreach because my gear level was 2 points too low. Problem was I was still questing in the low level zones so I wasn't getting any gear of the right ilevel. Wasn't until a garrison mission earned an appropriate gear reward that I dinged.

Also, I still only see 4 instances in the Looking for Group interface. do more open up now that I'm 100? Will I have the gear?

There is some neck item that I have that claims to reveal 'treasures' hidden throughout. What does this thing do?

When do gems come into play? I haven't seen any gem slots on the gear I've acquired? Is my herb garden just AH fodder? Or do I need that if I build an building associated with a profession that uses herbs?

I may have missed it but when do the visiting quest givers at your tavern start?

Thanks

You will get most of your leather from your garrison itself. You need
the trade station and the trader for this though. Once all your
buildings are up and running you can spend resources on leather. Beware
that the prices of leather goes up and down.
So build the trade station and the lumber mill for resources and get
them to lvl 3.

There is an addon called Master Plan. That addon makes the garrison
quest management so much easier and faster!

More will show up. But if you want to do heroic dungeons you have to
pass an obstacle called training grounds where you have to complete
silver before you can enter any LF dungeon in heroic mode. You need a
respec on specific classes (more or less impossible if you play arcane
mage or kitty druid). I had to respec to frost on my mage if I wanted
to complete silver.
Anyhoo. You can do the time-walking dungeons though without having
completed the training grounds and there shouldnt be any gear
restrictions there. Time-walking dungeons drop 660-685 gear.
Once you hit 100 forget questing and go straight for Tanaan. A quest
for Tanaan will show up in your garrison. Do this quest before you go
for Tanaan as this will open up the region (actually it IS open,
but...). The mobs and rares in Tanaan drops 650 gear which can be
upgraded to 695 (and with the latest patch it can be upgraded another 8
ilvl points).

It does absolutely nothing. :) Vendor it and get your 25 gold.

Forget all about gemming gear unless youre raiding. Gem slots on gear
is random. My best guess is that 5-10% of all dungeon and raid gear has
gem slots.

It can be better at first to take the Barn, capturing animals is an
easy source of leather which doesn't involve spending your limited
garrison resources! I have the barn on both my leatherwrkers, although
I'll likely switch it out for the trading post on one of other of them
in time, as once you're established at max lvl it's far easier to just
buy for resources than to go out trapping.

Yep, Tanaan is the catchup mechanism which makes it almost pointless
to bother opening up heroic dungeons unless you want quests from them.
Just run round Tanaan, do some LR and bam, you've got gear miles
higher than anything on offer in the dungeons...

Yeah, VERY annoying to me as a jewelcrafter, gems don't really sell at
all well nowadays because nobody has any sockets in their gear.
Thankfully Legion is apparently getting some items with guaranteed
gemslots again, I guess they realised that making a very fun
profession not fun at all was a silly move!

MasterPlan is one of the absolutely 100% required addons. The others are
DBM and Dominos. I won't run WoW without them.

Also, make sure you login ever 84 hours (or less) to get the stockpile
of garrison pogs.

This is helping. But I went and built the ship yard and lost my first ship on the first mission. I think I'm going to ignore this for a bit.

I'm not sure what the time-walking dungeons are. Everything in my LFG is locked out except Skyreach. I can't even query for a random and get the bonus reward. I have to query for the specific dungeon.

I went to Tanaan but find it a bit lethal at my current gear level or at least very slow to down the mobs.

Plus, I'm not in a hurry and I need to earn cash so I don't mind going through the zone quests. One of the things I did before I previously quit was sell a good junk of my gold (and I was gold capped at the time) to a guild-mate.

That's supposed to happen; it's part of the questline designed to
teach you that it *can* happen, and show you that you can just rebuild
your ship and carry on - you get a better quality ship when you follow
the quests and build a replacement. It's an annoying thing that can
happen, but they actually just hotfixed it to reduce chances of losing
ships on failed missions, should've been like that all along IMO.

Every weekend there is a bonus event; some weekends are Timewalking
weekends, where you can queue up for older dungeons from past
expansions. Since your gear is scaled down to the level of the
original dungeon, there shouldn't be any gear lvl limits on those.

>I went to Tanaan but find it a bit lethal at my current gear level or at least very slow to down the mobs.

It is a bit, your best bet there is to find the treasures and kill any
rare spawns you see, you'll get a few items there, which, even if not
optimal, will help a lot.

It's worth doing the quests for the story and gold, but not so much
for the gear, Tanaan gives miles better gear. But if you want to
experience the expansion as it would've been at the start without the
Tanaan catchup mechanism, go for it - it's rather more fun doing the
quests without being overgeared :-)

Forgot to say: rare spawns share tag with anyone else around, so you
can just wait for a better-geared person to start fighting them, and
hit them yourself to get the tag and hopefully some loot - it's very
useful when you're lowgeared! Same applies to world bosses, like
Kazzak - if you find his spawnpoint up in the Throne of Kil'Jaeden,
it's well worth killing him for a chance at high lvl loot. You will
die, but there's a graveyard nearby; so long as you've hit him once
you'll get the chance of loot :-)

Yep I experienced that as well. Got ganked trying to participate so I just waited and looted some new gear.

I've seen it mentioned before and I gather there is random 'treasure' around but not sure how to find it. what am I looking for?

Treasures are clickable ground objects. They're small, and often well
hidden, so they're easy to miss. They contain garrison resources and
sometimes a toy, pet, armor, or weapon.

After completing all the questlines in a zone, you can go to a vendor in
Ashran who sells treasure maps for each zone. Buying and using one of
these will mark all of that zone's treasures on your minimap.

Some follower missions also award the treasure maps.

No, don't. Yes, you will lose ships. So waht, buld as many as you can
and run the missions. I will not run anything under 80% success, and try
for 92% or better, but at the start, you just build them until you start
getting good rewards, And you do get good rewards. 5K Apexis, for
example. Baleful armaments for you and your alts.

Not sure how you can guarantee that success rate in the early part. Most of my ships don't match the attributes needed to make the missions successful.

So a few further thoughts after over a week. I've run most of the heroics multiple times and have min 630 gear in all slots with a few 670 items just to get a feel for where I'm at. I'm almost out of zone quests as well except for Tanaan.

what appeared to be a casual friendly pursuit is anything but. you can spend all your time gathering the mats to fulfill work orders. but then you aren't generating the funds needed to improve your stuff. I have no idea how you are supposed to pay for everything you need to buy to keep moving forward. New quests cost money.(wtf?) garrison plan upgrades cost money and then resources. New followers cost money. respeccing followers cost money. But it seems the one tried and true way of previously making money (selling mats on the AH) is no longer viable as everyone has an herb garden/mine. I know people have had a lot of time to get their stuff up to level 3, I'm just not seeing how it is viable. so previous answers here about getting my buildings up to level 3 don't seem achievable.

How do you make money to overcome the high cost of everything? Can this even be done with an hour of play a night or even every couple of nights?

How do you get your followers to have the attributes needed to complete the garrison quests successfully? I think I only have one of two of a certain type but most of the quests require it.

another random observation: Most of the treasure items are located in a spot that either requires flying or is not compatible with WOW physics.

Finally, I don't see that there is much to do in Tanaan. I have maybe one quest and there are a few blue quests. Still find the zone very lethal.
