I did it on my arcane my Saturday and got him on my 3rd attempt.... :)
I pretty much did as above with a couple of minor differences.....First,
I didn't hit him with much at the beginning. I just focused on survival
until he brought in the adds. At that point, I kited them a second or
two over to the front entrance (opposite of the balcony) without
obviously letting them touch me before I turned invisible. I found this
let me have the entire balcony available for the fight without fear of
aggro near the top of the stairs. Once I got him up there I used my
mirror images so they could be off CD after he did his mirror thing down
on the floor. While he did that, I did as described above and stayed
near the rail of the balcony waiting. I learned to watch my character
portrait during this time as I had no aggro. The second it turned red I
knew the phase had ended and wrathion was coming after me. It allowed
me to get a full mana shield and be ready to run before he ran up the
stairs and became visible with his "AH-HA!!" that he yells as the first
thing he does is cast the cone.
With regards to set up, after the first attempt so I could see what I
was dealing with, I took stock in my abilities. I felt that the rune of
power was pretty much useless as your not standing long very long for
any benefits, plus the longer cast time is a waste. That, and he nukes
the spot you were standing in anyway for the remainder of the fight so
you can't even set up two and run back to the previous. So - I ditched
that and took the evocation ability, and changed out my glyph to allow
the 60% heal when it's used. This allowed me to easily heal myself
during the break when your waiting for him to come back. That part
almost feels like a boxing match where you go to your corners in between
rounds and it lasts for quite a while...lol. It also gave me the choice
while fighting for the 1-2 times that I did take a hit, to blink and
evocate rather than hit him. To be honest there was only one time I was
down on my health past 80% during the fight until the last part. I got
a little over zealous on my last attempt when his health was down to 10%
as I wanted to wrap it up before another "hide on the balcony" phase, so
I got a little stupid. I defeated him with only about 10% of my health
left.
It was kinda a fun fight, but to be honest, I felt a little like
cheating it. I think Blizzard needs to revisit this fight and make some
changes. I don't think they intended you to drop aggro from the adds,
and be able to hide on the balcony and never get involved in such a long
phase they obviously meant for us to spend time dealing with (his mirror
phase). On the flip side, I think the damage from the fight would need
to be adjusted if they want us fragile clothies to survive without
hiding from it. The damage from some of the abilities combined with the
touch of death from the adds is really a lot.
My friend is up to working on it today with his pally. He had a
tremedously difficult time on the solo scenario in the forge as he is a
tank/healer pally (pre-nerf). Tank was impossible, and after 50+
attempts he managed it on heals...barely. He did it on his priest and
got it on the 3rd attempt so that fight is really out of whack. Anyway,
he should have a better time with this - or at the very least he has two
choices. If he's having a hard time with the Red Crane temple on heals,
he can try the Black Ox tanking fight instead or via-versa....
