*sigh* - The collapse of my guild...

S U N risr

Well - I guess it was bound to happen. My lvl 25 mid-size guild had
been struggling to find enough of the right people to raid, and after a
month of raid nights missed, 2 people up and vanished - Just stopped
playing. A few weeks ago, 3/4 of the raid group (officers and the GM)
left game and went over to Rift. Interestingly, they are using a
channel in ventrillo to play, so I was able to talk with them. More or
less they all have been playing since Vanilla and got bored and WoW'ed
out. They decided to try out Rift, as even though it's WoW-like, it's
all new areas, and quests got them interested. The GM said he's
actually enjoying questing again. This left 4 of us officers left in
game and a few levelers, none of which play on any regular basis. At
any given time the most on is 3 people at once. Anyways - I've been
trying to keep positive, but without the social aspect I've gotten bored
extremely fast. Why am I building up my toon? I''m ilevel 375 on my
main...for what? fishing dailies? Got nothing else to buy with
valor....Anyway, it's enough so, that I've considered leaving game
myself, but not to join them - Just take a break. I'm not sure what
I'm doing. My RL friend (and one of the other officers) has been
playing with me from the start of vanilla and he's at the same point.
We've been talking and are going to try one more thing before calling it
quits. We're going to pull our mains from the guild and try another to
see if we get the itch again, although he's doubtful. He's been playing
from one month after release of vanilla and feels the game has been
ruined over time. I feel bad for my other couple of friends left in my
guild and it's the only reason I've stayed with it as they are not into
raiding so they wont leave. I'm keeping my other toons in to try and
keep it running and show my face in there. (To who? I don't know) I
guess it's just that I worked my ass off building it up, it hurts to
watch it fall apart...

Anyway - That said.... I've gotten bored enough to load in "Oblivion -
Elder scrolls IV" - the last game I played before playing WoW and am
surprised at a number of things. 1) the graphics of an old game like
Oblivion are still better than WoW. 2) Leveling a toon is challenging.
lol. I ran into a highwayman last night who sprung out to rob me.
He gave me a choice to beg him for an easy death or fight him, but
either way he was going to get my money (Not much of a choice if you
ask me) when I was running down the road on a quest. I was like "ok -
np"....He kicked my ass. lmao

The controls are messing me up changing between the two games though.
In oblivion, moving the mouse (not pressing anything) turns your toon.
Playing a Warrior, the right mouse is your shield, the left is your
Sword so when you fight something you watch their energy. When high
they are attacking and you right click to block, then they get tired and
that's your chance to attack. Haven't played that way in a while.
That, and the keyboard I think I need to remap somehow. The spacebar is
how you interact with the environment (opening doors, fences, collecting
herbs, talking to people) and 'A' & 'D' are strafe - 'E' is jump. Can't
tell you how frustrating it is trying to crouch and sneak around a mob
to come up behind them - go to strafe right and end up jumping, which in
this game really does mean "sneak, sneak , sneak - almost there...go to
strafe right....and jump up "SURPRISE!! HERE I AM!!" Probably would
give the mob a heart attack if he had one...lmao

ah well - figured I'd vent my frustrations and share my weekend
experience. I'll let you know how the new guild works out, or if I join
the ranks of ever growing former WoW players. I just don't want to jump
into another online game like Rift at this point and get drawn in...

Well, you could wait until november and get Skyrim instead :-)

If it doesn't work out and I leave game, I was thinking it'd be good to
take the fall off until Christmas and then maybe look into SWTOR.

That seems to be all the talk in and out of game, so I started doing
some reading up on it. Sounds pretty cool....we'll see.

Yep.
Still uncertain on what the payment model will be, though.
I hate microtransactions.

I pared down my play time to only about an hour a week, starting late
spring, jumping online mainly to stay in touch with old friends.

I replaced my online time with sports. I've lost 0.5 lbs a week for
the past 20 weeks, and I'm sure I've converted an equivalent amount of
fat into muscle, as my clothing fits completely differently now.

Now that I've gotten back into sports, I doubt that I will ever get
sucked into another WoW style game.

That's cool - however, for me personally replacing something like WoW
(or gaming) with sports like you is not practical (or a problem). I
rarely, very rarely play during daylight hours. Maybe a Saturday
afternoon if it's raining or difficult to be outside due to weather here
and there. I own a house, so lawns need to be mowed, things fixed,
etc., plus I have young kids so weekdays after work involve me being the
taxi driver. I log to play after the kids are in bed for the night. My
wife reads her Nook near me while I play. What online gaming (and
reading for my wife) replaced for us was television at night. We can't
go out and leave the kids home alone at night...lol - so I used to plop
down and relax with certain TV shows. Now I game and she reads. The
TV only goes on for movies here and there and the kids have a couple
shows they watch before bed. Now, I'd be lying to you if I didn't admit
that I do have a few pounds I need to lose that I laughingly tell my
wife is "wow weight". This is from a bad habit I did pick up playing
WoW. When I used to watch TV, either I'd sometimes pass out watching
something around 10 pm, turn it off when my wife kicked me telling me to
go to bed. Now I tend to stay up later and grab a snack here and there
at a later hour, that I'd used not to do.

So gaming replacing TV: Could be looked at as a good thing.
Staying up later with late night snacks: Bad habit developed.
The rest of my life before / during WoW really unchanged too much.

Your WoW schedule is very similar to mine.

Since I work at a desk all day, I invested in a standup
workstation for my gaming at night. The health benefits are
supposed to be pretty good, and it takes up a lot less space,
too.

I too work at a desk all day. I do need more exercise - I'm not saying
I don't - just that WoW really has not made a significant difference as
far as the exercise issue goes.... My problem with a stand up
workstation is that I do have 2 extruded discs from an injury, so
standing for long periods of time in one place is not fun. I stiffen up
so I have to keep moving. As long as I'm moving around, it's not so
bad. During my kids soccer games I'm constantly moving up and down the
sideline. I'm too into the games to sit...lol. Plus in-between games
I'm always kicking the ball around with them. Sunday's are very busy
days. :)

Again, my problem is too much intake, not enough output during the week
and probably not enough sleep. The sleep thing is WoW attributed I
guess. I'll stay up that extra 1/2 - 1 hour to finish up my dailies, or
because I que'd and the damn thing says it's a 15 minute que, only to
get to minute 14 and now it says 24 minutes....Well I invested this much
time...only to get in a group that takes twice as long as needed to run
something... Or those times when your into something and you finally
look and say "Holy Sh@t!! didn't realize it was that late!!" I've left
my toons in some weird places because of that one. Didn't care about
hearthing...cared about logging and getting to bed...We've all
experienced it, I'm sure. :)

Yes! The urge to do just one more thing before logging usually
adds a cool forty minutes to my gaming session. Even worse is if
I decide to check reddit real quick or see what's new at
thatguywiththeglasses.com before turning off the PC.

Yeah, a bad back makes a stand-up workstation a no-go.

I went with a stand up desk at work, matched with a bar height chair.
Even people with bad backs would benefit, as having a stand up desk
allows you to get up far more often during the day, even if you still
sit most of the time. Someone with a sitting desk cannot do work while
standing, while in the reverse situation, I can continue working
whilst standing or sitting, without breaking a stride.

As for gaming at night, I also game at night, so I had to play sports
at night too. Hockey leagues open late in my area, as does the local
rock climbing gym, as does my normal gym. Lifting free weights is my
least favorite activity of the three, but it has noticeably helped
with both skating and climbing, which encourages me to keep at it.

In terms of eating junk food, you can break that habit if you want to,
without going the abstinence route. Replace sugar drinks with diet
drinks and replace chips with fruits or vegetables. Replacing sugar
drinks alone is worth 5 lbs a year for most adults. Replacing the
chips and junk food in your house with healthy snacks is worth a
similar amount, as healthy alternatives (even with a dip) have high
volume to calorie ratios, which trick your body into feeling full
faster.

I went so far as to remove all microwavable / ready to eat products
from my house, aside from fruits or vegetables. This forces me to
actually cook something, if I want a non-fruit/veggie snack, and
laziness tends to win out over cooking.

As for your spouse, trust me on this one, your wife wants to see you
lose weight too, so she'll go along with the plan.
