Patient's Name: alt.groups.warcraft
Cause of Death: Unknown
Proof of death: No pulse for over 1 week

God our Father,
Your power brings us to birth,
Your providence guides our lives,
and by Your command we return to dust.

Lord, those who die still live in Your presence,
their lives change but do not end.
I pray in hope for my family,
relatives and friends,
and for all the dead known to You alone.

In company with Sylvanas,
Who died and now lives,
may they rejoice in Your kingdom,
where all our tears are wiped away.
Unite us together again in one family,
to sing Your praise forever and ever.

Amen.

I see the following posts over the last week:

08/08 - 13
07/08 - 0
06/08 - 2
05/08 - 1
04/08 - 1
03/08 - 6
02/08 - 16

So, it's not dead yet. It's not thinking about getting up and running
a marathon either, but it's not quite dead.

It could be just a summer thing as well, but that's kinda a weak argument...

However - that said, I have every header and poster saved since I
started reading this group in October, 2009 in my reader, and looking
back over the list, the group has lost some of it's most frequent
posters for whatever reasons. Whether it was argumentative, observation
or chatty type posts, they typically spurred replies that snowballed and
showed the group was active. The loss of posters without fresh blood to
replace them is more likely the reason...

Recently the group lost Urbin (who posted a ton) who is taking a break
from WoW, but also posts from:

Shiftlet, CJ Campbell, Rob Wynne, Burt Johnson, Cryptoengineer,
Hoofu&Oggie, James Of Tucson, & Lewis to name a few who posted regularly
and haven't been heard from since at least May/June this year...

Whether you liked/agreed with them or not makes no difference - just
stating they were big posters last year and the first 1/4 of this and
have stopped posting...That's a big hit.

Just saying...

All the usenet groups in which I participate have gone slack in
the last couple of months. It's probably a seasonal thing.
Colleges and Universities and schools will be welcoming back
their students shortly, and I expect many regulars will return at
the same time.

Meh - maybe, but the ones I listed posted regularly through last summer.
A lot of those students you mention don't even know what Usenet
is...lol. Many use the web based forums now. Me? I much rather use
this. I don't need log-ins everytime, graphics, advertisements,
constant scrolling up and down to find posts, refresh the site, etc.
Give me the clear-cut data I'm looking for, in an e-mail type view, that
checks for new messages every 5-minutes and brings them into
Thunderbird, organizes it any way I want, and gives me the info in
clear, quick fashion that allows me to reply in the same any day over
that.

But your right that most of my other groups are posting low as well,
except my groups that have older posters - Those get a couple hundred a
day...You'd figure my guitar groups would be all young, snot nosed punk
kids, but a lot of them must talk about the '60's and 70's music and
bands, and the conversations drift to Geritol, aches and pains of
playing with arthritis, etc...lmao Point is, the older folks are the
ones really using Usenet, so eventually I feel it will go to pasture
unfortunately...

Could be actual death we are talking about. Except for Urbin who said
good-bye.

Face it, people who prefer Usenet to web forums are probably old timers
who are actually old. I am 57, and although I plan to be around for
many more years, that is not a promise.

If I just stopped posting one day, would any of you miss me?

Probably not...I doubt all those I listed passed away within a few
months... :)

Hey! I'm only 41! lol....

I don't consider that an old timer...Although to a 18-21 year old
college student, I'm ancient I guess... :)

I hope I am as well, but anything is possible.

Sure! I would have included you on the list :)

Seriously, anytime someone stops posting without the addition of new
blood, they are missed. The quality and activity in the group
diminishes, which in turn leads to more people reducing their posts,
which leads to people only checking in once in a while, etc, etc.

It's kind of like what you see with some guilds, ain't it? Where all of
a sudden you start wondering where everyone went...

Yeah, agreed, think mostly it's got bored of WoW/taking a break kinda
thing. Although I do wonder about an old friend of mine I used to
quest with a fair bit back in vanilla/TBC, he used to quit the game
for 3-6 months at a time but it's been over 2 years this time. Knowing
what I did of some of his personal life, I'm more than a little
worried about him (not my place to share it publicly, but I'm not
overdramatising, I do have a genuine cause for concern as to his
wellbeing). It's a real shame there's no way to trace folk who aren't
actively playing just to see if they're ok, would love to just know
he's still out there somewhere, even if he never comes back to WoW.
It's a downside to the net as a whole really, people disappear and you
never know why.

I'm only 27! Probably not very many younger than me use Usenet (for
anything other than downloading binaries), but I certainly don't think
I'm that much of an oldtimer. Even if I do spend a fair amount of time
moaning about how things were better in my younger days lol ;-)

Agreed, you do indeed notice it when people go. I'll admit I hadn't
remembered everyone on your list of names but I had found myself
wondering where Shiflet got to, for all I often ended up arguing with
him, we agreed on a fair bit too, and he certainly kept conversation
going!

The barrier of entry to Usenet is like a humongous mountain
compared that of blogs and web forums. So it seems to me most
Usenet groups willd die slowly from lack of new membership.

Google Groups is prolonging things, but it's a PITA.

I know for me, I only ready this NG from work (because when I'm home,
I want to be playing :D).

The only way I know how to access this NG is via Google Groups (no
clue what a newsreader is or how to set one up or if I could even do
that on a work computer). GG has been having some *major* issues for
about three weeks now. It's simply not updating the NG. I seem to be
able to post things, which others can see, but I won't see myself
until GG decides to update, which it finally did yesterday, the 10th.
It had been nine days since the last update. And it hasn't updated
since.

I've kinda given up on this NG until GG gets its stuff together. I'll
check it -- nope, last post still showing as almost two weeks ago, and
move on.

I wonder of there are others who only post here from work and who are
going through the same thing.

Google finally announced today that they expect to have their
Usenet mirror operatinal again soon, and that it was not in
intentional outage.
