14 GB of changes each time I launch WoW!?

burt

5/25/2011 8:48:00 AM

I have a multi-levlel automated backup system that backs up locally and
remotely (to my sister-in-law's house 50 miles away) every hour. Great
system, and one I recommend to everyone (have a local backup? what
happens in a fire or burglary...?)

At any rate, I have noticed that my backup is often setting at 14 GB of
changed data to be updated. I was wondering what the heck was so big,
since this happened even when I was not in my studio (at 25 MB / image,
my photo shoots quickly eat up GB).

I tracked it down -- WoW. Seems that a whole bunch of data files get
tagged as having changed, with the result of 14+ GB of data needing to
be backed up again every time I launch WoW. Happens even if I never log
into a toon's world.

Wroks OK in my system, but for anyone wondering why their backup disks
are filling up so quickly, you might want to look here...

FWIW, I use 6TB backup disk locally and a 8TB Drobo backup drive
remotely. I have a basic set of data to backup of just over 2TB, and
add probably an average of 20GB per week (mostly photos). The 14+ TB
here is a nuisance, but it rolls off the history pallate, and probably
does not materially impact my overall backp approach. Still, it nags at
me... :)

so see my favorite studio shots, which is really where my favorite work
happens...

Not cache files and WTF folder getting flagged as changed?

Yeah, my first guess would be it's your Auctioneer database.

14GB of Auctioneer data? That's a lot! :P

Now that you mention it, that *is* ridiculous. My bad.

On my Mac I noticed what seemed to be a huge chunk of data getting
backed up over and over. I seem to remember it was the cache & WTF files
like BombayMix mentioned. It was definitely WoW doing it.

I run off a 500 gig drive and backup to a 2 TB drive that remains
unmounted when I'm not using it. It's only mounted to do backups.

I have about 250 gigs used on my boot drive and backup the entire drive
weekly or so. After I noticed my 2 TB backup drive was filling up a
little quicker than I expected, I checked to see what was taking up all
the space. It was pretty much WoW taking up the space. I deleted all the
WoW backups and gained a whopping 300+ gigs back!

So now I delete the WoW backup before doing a new backup. This way WoW
always gets backed up. I also sync WoW and a few other things on my
notebook so I have at least 3 copies of my "important" things on 3
different machines.

You might want to look into flagging WoW to NOT being automatically
backed up, then back up WoW manually now and then. Delete the old
backups. How many do you need? Only the latest one for me. <grin>

I get the same problem on my Mac -- Time Machine seems to back things
up incessantly and it is all World of Warcraft.

I am a fan of your work, by the way.

Some of mine can be seen here:

http://homepage.mac.com/christopherjcampbell/Images%20By%20Christopher/lar...

There

is some overlap between the two -- Apple can't seem to get their act
together on how to handle these personal web pages.

I need to find a new web designer.

awesome pics! do you know of any good "non-studio" digital field
cameras? All my photo equipment is in storage in another state and I
just use a canon point and shoot now. Ive been hesitant to invest in a
serious digital camera until I can find out if i can simply get a
digital back for my Tachihara 4X5 field camera. If it was the same
form factor as a Graflex 6X9 roll film back i would be happy.

I dont necessarily need RAW files or super large image sizes....i just
want the controls i had (shift lenses come close but its not the same).

That is some impressive work! Congratulations.

If you are looking for a digital back for a 4X5 camera, then you are
looking to invest LOTS of money, and probably need a discussion well
beyond what should go into a WoW forum.

Personally I use a Canon 5D MK II and love it. I use a little Canon
Powershot SD600 for my behind-the-scenes images, where I document how I
did things so I can answer questions at our local camera club (Berkeley
Camera Club ( http://berkeleycamer... ).

I LOVE your Alaska shots! We went to Alaska last year, and I was hoping
for some good bear photos. Of course, we were just on a cruise, so only
had a day in each port, which isn't enough for getting good shots unless
you are pretty lucky.

I have finally decided that I just don't have the patience to make birds
(or most animals) a specialty though. Too much sitting and too much
waiting for the right conditions and for the anmial to come and do what
I want. My inanimate objects in my studio are much more cooperative! :)

I create my web site entirely from within Adobe Lightroom. If you don't
have it, you should, if you are at all serious about photography. I
tried Aperture, but it just doesn't work nearly as well as Lightroom,
which is why Adobe has a 90% market share there -- even among Mac users
like myself.

FWIW, I am starting a Lightroom class for our local camera club at our
first meeting in June. They have been bugging me, and I finally gave
in. I will teach another module / topic each month until either I run
out of things to say or they get tired of hearing me and stop coming...
