Back in the saddle again

Fvert

My hardware wasn't up to snuff so I have been out of WoW since the patch
before Cata came out. I am upgrading hardware later this week and plan
on re-upping to WoW.

Main Question: I plan on buying the Cata upgrade from a brick and mortar
store. Will that install all the main versions (I know I will have
patches to add) or do I have to install the original and the various
expansions before installing Cata?

Second Question: Is it still just 10 toons per server? If so I will have
to figure out who if anyone can get Archaeology

Third Question: What do I have to do to fly in the old world?

I'm expecting to have to figure out the new specs and re-apply talent
points. I'll see what my old guild is up to if they are even still
around. It was a social guild and not much of one at that. Then to see
about getting at least my lock and hunter to 85 and exploring all the
changes Cata has wrought.

Yes. If you have the disks, vanilla, Burning Crusade, Litch King, then
Cata.

Still 10 per, and everyone can get Archaeology; it's like fishing and
cooking, not a prime profession. BTW, it can be useful at times to
level. You get serious points for digging up stuff.

Hit 60 and pay a fee for "Navigation." It's about 200 gp if memory
serves. Well worth it.

It takes a while. I'm still not thrilled that my characters lost the
blend I thought was best and are now shoehorned into one of three
sub-specialities per class. On the other hand, there's a lot of new
stuff they can do that's fun.

Best, R.E.F.

Pretty sure Lich King came on a DVD with all the game files from
Vanilla and TBC and I imagine Cata was the same, so should only have
to stick the Cata DVD in and install and you'll be good to go (once
you upgrade your account with the key from the Cata box you brought)

Of course, as always, if you have your old install folder still
available on your new hardware, you should be fine to install Cata
into that. May be a bit quicker, though given the wide changes with
Cata, maybe not much.

Why?

Yes, 10 toons per server, 50 toons total last I heard.

Buy a license for ... 250g I think.

Look, you don't 'install' Cataclysm. Every WoW install is the same, with
the same exact files and the same exact data. If you have WoW installed,
you launch it, download the patches, and you are set to go. To enable
the Cataclysm features you simply add the Cataclysm license to your
battle.net account.

There is no 'install' there. Anyone who tells you differently is flat
out 100% wrong. The ONLY advantage to having the physical discs is if
your bandwidth is limited, in which case it will save you a little bit
of downloading.

Downloading and applying the patches is "installing" Cataclysm. The
Cata content wasn't on our computer, and then it is. That's
installing. It doesn't have as much to with being able to _play_
Cataclysm as adding Cataclysm to your WoW account does, but it's still
installing.

Not necessarily just a *little* bit, if you've got to install the
entire game on a fresh hard drive (though if you've still got access
to an old install, that could be a bit quicker)

But yeah, that is all having the disc's get you.

By new hardware, you mean new PC, or just new components? If you are
getting a new PC, since the last patch you have was right before cata,
if you have access to a external/removable hard drive, your best bet is
to copy the WoW folder to that and transfer it to the new PC. Go to
your Battle.net and purchase the Cata upgrade, then go to log in. Will
save you a ton of time. All updates will automatically begin to
install. Just prepare to give yourself a bit of time to let it do it's
thing and don't expect to play for perhaps a few hours, depending on
your connection and PC.

If you are updating your current PC, you shouldn't need to do anything
except go to battle.net, purchase the upgrade, log in, and let it do
it's thing.

No - all your toons can have it...

Reach level 60, and purchase a "license" from any flying trainer for 250g

I do - so I should be able to do just the Cata expansion install and
then whatever patches are needed to get current.

Of course that reminds me I will have to sort out ad ons again, what to
upgrade and keep and what to get rid of and what new ones I need. <sigh>

I'm on a Mac and going from a PowerPC G4 machine to an Intel quad core
i5. I do have my WoW folder still on the G4 but am going to reinstall as
many apps as I can and not just migrate them to get as many of my apps
"Native" as I can.

I am not sure if that applies to WoW or not but other than any Apple
patching, WoW will be my first install after I get it out of the box. I
am old enough I still like having the media and my wifi is the slowest
it can be from my cable provider to save some $$$.

Wow on my G4 was minimal. I had a 19" CRT only 1 gig of RAM and 32 megs
video. I only got 1 or 2 fps in Dalaran. I am looking forward to how the
whole game will look and feel, not just with the Cata expansion but with
a machine that has more oomph.

I believe that means you'll need to do essentially a completely new
install. I think the Cata DVD will handle most of that, just leaving
the patches since release to download and apply.

Since you haven't played since before Cata's release, even if you
could, there aren't any patches or parts of patches you could copy
across to reduce the amount you need to download.

Which is another useful thing about doing a completely fresh install,
you won't have old patches and such laying around wasting hard drive
space.

Given the number of patches since you last played, you'd need to
download the newer versions of any add-on's you use. However, you
could still copy across the wtf folder or some of it's subfolders to
retain the settings of the add-ons. So things like Clique bindings,
Altoholic's records of what's on your characters and other such.
There may be some other useful settings that it'll copy across too.

G4? That one must have some miles? Why all the clean installs? I've
upgraded two towers and three laptops in the last three years and
migrated all of them. Saves a shitload of time and headaches. Last
time I reinstalled applications and manually moved files took the better
part of two days.

1 or 2 fps? How slow is your internet connection? I have Uverse and
the cheapest per month is 3 mbps down/.5 up for $35 a month. For $5
more, it doubles to 6/1 which is probably the slowest I'd want to play
on-line games on. Another $5 and it doubles again.
