The Long and Winding PuG!

Orion Ryder

The Mrs and I ended up in Heroic Stonecore yesterday morning. We moved
well but kept wiping on the 3rd boss.

However the group was not getting frustrated and each attempt you
could see that it was getting better and better. My wife and I have
kiled that boss several times and we jsut had to be patient with these
people.

Finally it ended up where two DPS died, a kick ass hunter and a lame
DPS mage. The boss was at 20% and it was just the tank, my wife's
rogue and my healy priest. The mage quit the group however the 3 of us
took the boss down. Too bad the hunter coudl not stay alive because
his DPS was rocking. I tried to Holy Nova him to break his paralysis
but between having to heal I did not always get the chance.

A guildee of the tank joined to replace the mage and we pounded the
last boss to smithereens.

So despite the pain of wiping several times on the 3rd boss it was a
happy ending.

By the way when we killed the first boss it was a wipe because at the
end it was just me and the tank and the boss and we all had slivers of
life and there werecrabbies running around. The boss died then the
tank died and I ran around trying to keep myself alive holy novaing me
and the crabbies but not enough life for me and I succumbed. But a
victory is a victory is a victory.

HUZZAH!

OH! OH! OH!

Does holy nova really break the paralyze?

I was told that damage to the toon would end it.

That was why you were to cast a DoT on the boss during Elementium
Bulwark because it would spell refelct to you and the damage from the
DoT would unparalyze you.

It seemed to work but I was not always able to do it. The tank would
move out of range so I would have closer. I probably should have
suggested to the hunter to stay close to me when I moved.

Oh well...

Right, but for friendly characters holy nova is healing, not damage.

But I wouldn't be surprised if holy nova counted as a "damage effect"
with an actual damage amount of zero... Interesting.

Hmm, well maybe what I saw is not what I thought I saw.

Or maybe what I thought I saw is not what I saw.

Or maybe what I saw that I thought was...

Oh nevermind...

I've had a horrible time with that boss on my arcane mage - I dread that
boss and would really like to try to bug him and just move on (blink,
invis.. ignore him) but so far no one's been willing to try that.

My main problem has been lack of dots .. and then there's DBM, the fight, my
latency in Australia all combining to suggest what I see and get as warnings
is totally diffent to the fight as it occurs. It's the single worst
encounter for me in game and I usually spend the whole time stunned and
miserable about being a non contributing party member.

I tried the flame orb and flamestrike but that didnt seem to do anything,
guildies have told me an AoE being an area affect doesnt count as direct
damage to the boss, so again I just don't have a clue what to do against
him!

I'm normally the top or at worst, second on recount for both damage and dps,
but there I am useless.

If holy nova could break me free, I'd really love to have a priest try that!

I do that encounter on my arcane mage, and it can be done without dots.
If you time it right, you can launch your arcane missles and they
reflect back to break you free and prevent the stun. If you miss, you
can Ice block out one time. If you are human, every man for himself
breaks you free. I haven't tried equiping a PvP trinket before that
fight yet, as I haven't needed it. Getting the timing down is tricky
and I still miss it, but I have the two freebies of breaking the stun to
get me through. If you miss it a third time, and nothing you can do
about it, You can help yourself and the healer by having the evocation
glyph (you should as an PvE arcane mage anyway) after yo get stunned,
evocate and bring yourself up to full (or near full) health which should
get you through another miss. If you are with a good group, you can
miss all reflect and get through as rarely will you get to the 4th miss
before you get him down. If your in a bad group, you might run into
trouble a bit with it, but then again - you have other issues wrong with
the group. But the end result is that it is totally doable as an Arcane
mage.

The only encounter as an arcane that I felt I *had* to change to my fire
spec so far, is the 3rd Boss in the new ZA dungeon (the fire boss,
ironically), but it could have just been the groups I've been with. The
whelps need to be AoE'd down as they just do a ton of damage if you try
to get them with Arcane explosion without the tank or someone else
picking them up. By far, the toughest boss of the 6 in that encounter,
IMO....

Priests (or any healer) can break you out of the paralyze by dispelling
you, assuming they break themselves free first with a reflected dot. I
was just wondering if Holy Nova would work also.

If the healer just isn't dispelling you, that's a different problem. On
that fight I always try to dispel hunters and non-fire mages because they
lack dots to do it themselves.

For some reason I had the silly notion that dispel would not work and
that it had to be damage that would set one free.

silly silly silly
