I'd have to say the best class would be either hunter or warrior.

Hunter because you have a pet. Soon as possible get a boar or a bear. Either are great damage takers and take a bit of abuse to put down. I personally like the cat family. They put out really nice damage and their high dex makes them a good tank since they get missed alot.

Warrior because you can wear mail(plate at 40) and with a hefty two hander you will burn the mob's health down fast.

Race for hunter does not matter really. Though Orc pets get a damage bonus and trolls get increase crit change with bows and dwarves with guns.

Race for warrior i'd lean heavily towards Tauren since they get bonus hitpoints.
Orcs can enrage and trolls can berserk increasing damage which helps.

The other races have some bennifits but I don't think they outweight doing extra damage and more hitpoints. Though gnome and humans being able to get out of speed altering things could mean you'd be able to run away:)

I disagree about the warrior. Warriors are *very* gear dependent, have
few escape options and poor healing.

Well, if you make it a Nelf warrior, you also get shadow-meld to help
escape, along with intimidating shout and ham-string and run. Plus
whatever stuns you have. Not sure what level they become available
these days. There's Knock-down and prot spec's get a couple more at
various levels.
The heal from Victory Rush is fairly large I'd say, but it is limited
in when you can use it. At the higher levels in a tanking spec and
gear, it's more than enough to cover the damage you take unless you've
got half a dozen or so mobs on you and too many of them die
simultaneously preventing you from getting the most use from it.

I'm not sure about gear dependance as I haven't leveled a warrior in
about forever.

I suspect a warrior could make a good choice for a 'hardcore'
character, but only if you've already gotten experience at playing
them. It's no simple "feign at the drop of a hat hunter". Which I
suppose may actually mean they aren't a good for hardcore characters.
Depends how you want to look at it. ; )

Poor healing? Heh. Obviously at low levels it will be less, but at 85, my
warrior's Victory Rush heals for around 48k. Comparatively, my shadow
priest's biggest heal was around 23k, my enhancement shaman's and DK's even
less. And Victory Rush costs no mana, no rage, and hits fairly hard to boot.
My warrior can take on literally 8 level 85 mobs in TB by himself and live,
and end the fight with full health...my priest or shaman or DK or warlock
would very likely end up dead in the same situation. Likewise, my warrior
can literally fight one mob after another, pretty much forever, and never
need to eat or bandage. And if you get in a tough spot you can pop Enraged
Regeneration for extra healing

As for escape options, you do have Hamstring and Intimdating Shout, plus
several other spec dependent abilities that can help you out too(Concussive
Blow and Shockwave for Prot, Piercing Howl for Fury, Throwdown for Arms)...

I've been playing warriors since beta. Trust me when I say they are
not as gear
dependent as you think. They can litterly use any armor item they'll
encounter as a drop
from level 1 to 85. Obviously not class specific ones though.

Have hamstring to get away. Costs very little rage and can be applied
to multiple targets as you are running away. Taurens have the added
benifit of warstomping and stuning those aroudn them for a couple
second headstart which could mean the difference between life and
death.

Also there is heroic leap.

VR heals for 22% base hps. So depending on your hps that's a nice big
chunk. As shif said later on at 85 it can be a huge one. my warrior
does the dailies in twilight highlands by pulling 10 dwarves at once
and just working around them till I finish them off. I even pull
extras when fighting the shaman so i can heal as he is going down.
Glyphed = 50% more. At the lower levels with the exception of druid
I doubt any class can withstand the damage a warrior can. I don't
count hunters cause all they are is send pet pew pew till its dead.
Add? oops run away and resummon pet. There is not a hard core ode
available for hunters, they are just to dam easy to level.

You don't get that till 85, so not really useful if one's goal is to play to
85 without dying.

I also forgot Commanding Shout in the warrior's toolbox, basically giving
you PW:Fort without being a Priest.

Well, my worgen warrior just hit lvl 40 without dying. In fact, he
hasn't even come close since leaving the starting area.

May be once this is done, I should try speed leveling a toon. I'd go a
*lot* faster if I put a toon through more challenging area for his
level.

Good luck. They've made orange quests basically impossible to
come by.
