New Instances

I'd like to share my strategies for the new instances added with the
latest patch.

Um, disable all your addons.

I got into the first fight and couldn't even move. My game was
completely frozen. I logged, turned off some addons, and tried again.
Nope. Totally frozen. I was the healer. Everyone died.

There seems to be something with these new places that really hates
addons. Recount in particular is causing trouble, according to
guildies and the two PuGs in my party.

I had to drop group. I was sad.

Then I got DCed from the server.

Updates to many of my add-ons were out by later last night. I started
running Zul Aman...Zul Am..(screw it...ZA <--- You know which one of
teh Zul's I mean) with 4 others from my guild and got the first three
bosses down before I had to leave group and go to bed. Did the Bird
boss, which was a nice change. Having to watch up for swooping brown
birds, that then take off out of range is something different. Also
having the white birds grab someone and take off with them sounds like
they borrowed the concept from the Lich King Valks...All in all, it's a
lot tougher in there, but a nice change. I *really* don't envy the
healers in these instances. Be kind to them and cut them slack.

Had a few guildies go through it complete in pugs, but it took them 2+
hours....Have to get back in there on an off raid night, as i have my
BoT progression tonight...<sigh>

Oh - Kind of OT - I do like the change on all the heroics of the valor
points working on a weekly system, instead of daily. So you can run 7
random heroic dungeons in one day and get all your Valor points for the
week instead of having to run them once a day, every day. So if you
have a few days where you know your not going to or can't play, you can
run 3 random dungeons in one night.

I have thought about running them at normal before trying out healing
them at heroic, if I can't get a full guild group with a couple of our
raiders.

I like this change too, but also because we can get a weeks points in a
few days, so it gets easier farming the points for multible chars. Quite
often I only get the instances done for my main, so my alts are way
behind in ilevel.

I really look forward to the 4.2 patch, where we can get tier11 from JP,
thus making it much faster to get alts geared up to a decent ilevel,
where they are viable for raids.

I don't think you can, afaik they are heroic-only instances. I'll
certainly be trying to get a guild group together tonight on my
warlock, who also happens to be an enchanter so any drops that nobody
can use will at least provide us with some maelstrom crystals.

I don't plan on running them on my Holy Priest until I am confident
that I know the encounters well enough, and then only in guild
groups...

Indeed. I finally disabled everything but Healbot and got into ZA (the
first one I tried was the other one). I have never felt like such a
fail healer, ever.

For the first boss, everything would be going okay, then suddenly
everyone would drop to like 40% health. I'm a Paladin - I can't dispel
and heal at the same time. So I never knew what to do first - heal or
dispel. We have two melee and the tank and that Overcharge debuff does
like 35,000 damage a tick to foks within X yards. With three melee.

I have healed on my Paladin for four years and use Healbot. I can
honestly say without a word of a lie that I have never, ever hovered
my mouse over boxes and left-clicked, shift right-clicked, etc. faster
than I did last night, and we'd all die anyway. My fingers started
hurting. I just couldn't keep up with all the damage.

Eventually for that first fight, the Warrior brought in his Shaman and
we had Nature resist. Only then did we make it.

Back to his warrior, and we had no one who could CC. I was blowing CDs
on every pack of trash mobs, and even then, we'd die anyway, or I'd
lose the tank at the last minute.

Second boss was pretty easy. Third, the fire and egg guy, we tried a
few times, then quit for the night. We'd be okay, be okay, then *bam*
massive group damage, I'm eaten by adds.

For the most part, at least with bosses 1 and 3, there is a lot of
party-wide damage and a lot of movement. I'm a Paladin. I don't party
heal or heal while moving very well at all. Not to mention, a lot of
the time the tank was getting cranked so hard I had to focus on him.

Tried Googling stategies, but just got old ones. Were we taking
avoidable damage? I don't know. But I have never felt so discouraged
or like such a failure as a healer in my entire healing career.

The Warrior guildie who was there with us went back with a PuG. He
finished the place, linking in guild all the drops he was getting. I
was like, how is the healer managing? He said that the group was
solid, which made me feel worse. I'm the speed bump. My fingers are
aching from mashing my mouse buttons over Healbot so hard and quickly,
and I'm the speed bump. Ugh.

As you can go different directions in there, I'm not sure what the first
boss is...I know you can go left to get the bird boss, and go right and
the first one you encounter is the guy that turns into a bear and back.
I'm terrible with Boss names, sorry.

You *need* cc in these instances - plain and simple. The trash hits
really hard. There were stories last night of people getting booted
from the instance selectivly on pugs before it even started, not for any
other reason than make-up. Had a guildie pug it and 10 seconds after
arriving he got a request to boot one of the other dps (warrior) as the
group make-up needed another cc.

Not necessarily - He could have lucked out on the pug and gotten a good
make-up of dps and cc that helped out a lot.

A lot from what I was hearing last night was it was hit and miss with
groups.

It's the bird boss, the one where birds will randomly pick up a person
and fly them around, then every once in a while someone becomes a
storm cloud.

Like I said, someone would get a static overcharge debuff that does X
damage to folks within X yards. We had a DK tank, a Rogue, a Warrior,
a Warlock, and my Holy Paladin. I was reaaaaallly missing Recount in
this place so I could see where all the damage was coming from. It
seemed to have already done a lot of damage even by the time my brain
registered someone had it, and I dispelled. I checked the Combat Log,
and it was doing like 35,000 Nature damage a tick. So now I'm trying
to heal everyone back up, but whoops the tank is almost dead. Whoops,
now someone else has the debuff, that's another 35,000 health everyone
is down, whoops, I got picked up by a bird, and now all the melee are
out of range of heals. Good thing my HoTs are ticking. Oh, wait. I
have no HoTs.

Read on old strategy, it says to spread out to avoid getting hit by
that debuff AoE. That's great. Now my Light of Dawn is really useless.
Now my Holy Radiance is useless. Now I'm trying to single target, hard
cast heal everyone to full, and we are all at 30% health. Whoops!
Picked up by a bird again. Whoops! Gotta run to be under the storm
cloud and I can't heal and run. Whoops! We're all dead. Whoops!

Well, that's good to know, since we had no CC. The Warlock didn't have
her Fear glyphed, the Warrior had no CC, and the Rogue switched to his
Priest to "help heal", since I was having such a heck of a time. I
suppose we should have tried MCing. As it was, I was rotating
cooldowns - Avenging Wrath, Guardian, Sacrifice, Divine Favor - for
*every* trash pull.

I dunno. I think I've just about had it with Cata healing. I'm just so
flippin' weak. I know I'm a teeth-grinder, and when I woke up this
morning my TMJ joint and my temples were killing me.

ah - gotcha...We wiped 2 times on this as well until we understood the
strat, so don't feel it's just you. The first time was going
well...shoot the white birds (priority) then the brown birds as they do
a lot of damage when they swoop in. We didn't know about the electrical
storm and that your supposed to stand under the person, so we tried to
stay away from that person....bad idea #1. We tried the second time to
stack on the tank thinking it would keep the birds in one general area
so we could dps them down quicker - bad idea #2, the boss didn't like us
too much...lol The last time, ranged just stayed back a bit near heals,
took out the white birds, then brown birds while melee focused mostly on
the boss. Ranged could get the white bird down quick if it picked up
the healer or the such. If this was heavy melee, the fight would be
really difficult. We went in with a Pally tank, Shammy heals, Fire
mage, Arcane mage and a warrior.

cc really only helps on the "trash", not so much on the boss fights.
Like we had a miscommunication on those 4 guys standing in front of the
"bear" boss and we pulled all of them and wiped. We then sheep two of
them, hex the 3rd and simply take down one at a time. I couldn't
imagine healing that with no cc...So don't get down on yourself (even if
you are Horde...lol) But seriously, don't take the blame for a not so
ideal group make-up as a fail job on healing...Not on these two
instances anyway.

I don't stress myself out on my heals (which is my alt). At i-level 333
(i think or 335 - not sure) he's geared for heroic but I heal for my
guildie whose leveling his 84 DK tank in regulars and enjoy it. (in
fact he calls me his personal healer - lol) I got called out by another
healer a few weeks ago when I said I'm comfortable with the regulars
right now with "why? because it's easy?". Well - yes and no. I don't
need or want the stress, would rather get compliments than angry shots
at me, am helping out others getting leveling, getting reputation for
rep gear of which I could use a few more pieces, and just having an
overall good time. Is that OK? I never claimed to be an uber healer
and I'm ok with that. :)
