Hunter/Pet question

Raymond E. Feist

2/18/2011 11:15:00 PM

OK, so I'm running my first hunter, ever, and have right now 3 pets, a
wolf, big kitty, and raptor. Right now the wolf looks to be the best of
the three and the raptor pretty useless next to the other two. All do
roughly the same damage, but the wolf has more health.

So, what am I missing? I have room for one more, and thought about one
of those flying moths in Tenokar, or a condor/buzzard or some other
flier. Or maybe a bear or bore for better tanking?

I guess what I'm asking is what is the best mix of pets? I run mostly
solo, so I really need something that pulls agro and tanks well, and so
far all three do it pretty OK.

Best, R.E.F.

There are three types of pet: Tenacity, Ferocity and Cunning.

Tenacity are tank based so will have more health/armour etc.
Ferocity are damage based so will do more DPS.
Cunning are somewhere in between (I think)

The three pets that you tried were all Ferocity pets. I think that a
ferocity pet is fine for levelling - they all hold aggro well enough and
I've never lost a fight where I thought that a slightly tougher pet
would have won.

The other difference between pets of the same type is their buff. Your
wolf would have given a 5% crit buff when it howled, the cat would have
given a strength and agility buff and the raptor gives a sunder armour
effect.

My hunter uses a Wolf.

http://www.wow-pe... is a good site for pet info.

I have a personal fondness for tenacity pets, especially boars. I would
agree that it doesn't make much difference what pet you use while
leveling. I have had the boar pull aggro from a tank, though, so when I
am in dungeons I use cats -- just because I think they look cool.

Some day I am going to level a hunter to the point that he can use a rhino.

I was a cat lover for a long time. Ferocity was good for me in PvP. Now
I've found I like the Tenacity pets for PvE, currently I have the white
gorilla found in Un'Goro Crater. It's a great aggro collector and holds
it well. When/if my hunter hits 81, he's going to tame the flaming
turtle in Mount Hyjal.

I'll miss the ape's animation, but I like the flaming turtle's looks.
My hunters have several pets, but they only use one tenacity for PvE and
one ferocity for PvP. The others are stabled.

I might as well chime in to point a finger at two very valuable but
little appreciated pets.

For anyone, the WASP is an extremely valuable pet. A high-level wasp
has two stuns in its native arsenal, and if you add intimidation that
makes three.

For BM hunters, the Silithid is an amazing pet, with a huge (party-wide)
stamina buff, and a stop-em-dead web attack.

Stuns are only of minor use in regular PvE play. My warrior has a 5s stun
that he almost never uses outside of PvP, and my rogue friends(who, being
rogues, have lots of stuns) rarely bother with them in regular play either.
They're awesome in PvP(which makes the wasp an EXTREMELY popular PvP pet,
definitely not underappreciated) but in regular play, they're very
situational.

Thanks for all the advice, folks.

twk, I'll tame a wasp in Zangramash and give it a try. As I said, I
have room for a 4th I'm not using. I'm thinking of making room by
losing the raptor. Looks cool, but the wolf and cat are better ferocity
critters I think.

I was thinking of getting a wasp after that description too. :-D
Thanks TPM.
Wolves & cats are top of my list for PvP. I just like the looks of the
cats a bit better. My ally hunter did tame Oloh though:
<http://www.wowhead.com/npc... and the Hodir NPC next to him doesn't
seem to mind that you're stealing his pet. An easy tame.

Wolves give a better party buff than cats.

And you can have *25* pets as a hunter.

I'm partial to the wolf. They do identical damage, but the wolf has
more health by a fair bit.
