Raided last night...

Well - we had TB, so I pugged a trade chat for dps for Baridin Hold. It
wasn't bad once you realized the mechanics and completed it on 2nd attempt.

WoW - feeling good! So a group of 10 of us in the guild decided to
stick our heads in each of the main 3 raids last night, just to get a
look at them first hand. We clearly, as a group were not ready yet, but
it was fun and felt great to be back in a raid, working things out,
figuring out things.

Bastion of Twighlight - This seems to be where we'll end up starting.
We carefully cleared the trash out and took several attempts on the boss
fight. Man they hit hard. We went with 3 heals and only go the dragon
down 3/4 the way, to say nothing of the main boss.

We then went over to take a look at Throne of the 4 winds...No trash -
interesting mechanics, and seemed a lot harder to coordinate. Took 3
attempts at that and didn't make too much of a dent.

Last, we went over to Blackwing descent...lmao We got hammered by the
trash trying to clear it.

Now before anyone makes fun of us, we were not prepared correctly, were
not taking a serious shot at anything, had not studied fights except the
one in BT because we made a dent and thought we had a legitimate shot,
so we decided to get serious on that a bit. We just wanted to get a
"look-see" at the content, and have some fun as a guild with raiding
again. It's been so long since we did a serious one. We've zerged
through low content for guild achievements, but this was at level and
had a good time, in spite of the repair bill.

But hey, the TB raid was an achievement for me, no? Even if that one
wasn't a guild run.. Was 2nd in dps on my arcane mage doing 14k... :)
Pretty easy for dps..it's all on the tanks and heals...so what else is
new? lmao.

Sorry for the long post - just had fun again last night. :)

The healing can get hectic at times, as can the dispelling, especially
when - like in my past two runs - you were the only one dispelling,
and the tanks have to coordinate their taunts, but I would argue that
this fight is almost entirely on the DPS, since Argaloth has a
relatively short Berserk timer.

Yes - I agree. All are responsible, of course. I just meant that the
tank and heals have tougher jobs than the dps. dps just stack on your
assigned tank and go at it...Run when fire comes out and stay out of it,
when it stops, stack back on your tank. Rinse and repeat until dead.
Was told that the rule of thumb is that all 6 dps need average over 10k
dps, as it is a dps race. Our wipe we had gotten him down to 400k life
left...so close. But one 9k dps had died, and one has only putting out
5k. That dps was booted, and replaced by a warrior putting out 9k in
the successful run. I did just about 14k, the Boomer behind me was 11k,
the remaining were at around 9k, but man - the top dps that had his
vitamins that day was a shadow priest putting out close to 16-17k... Jeez -

With the death of one 9k dps at about halfway, and the 5k, our average
was about 8-9k. After the boot and the fact that no one died, the
average was over 11k. Even then we were close to enraging, so I'd say
the rule of thumb was pretty right on...

Heh, during a Valentine's boss run last night, I got in a group with a
boomkin doing 18k. His average Starfire hit was 25k(and thus an average crit
of 50k), and he had a 63k Starsurge(58k being the average crit for that
ability). Even his Moonfire was ticking for around 5-6k non-crit, which
certainly ain't too shabby either(for comparison, my warrior, who pulls
11-12k dps pretty easily just self buffed, has his Rend do an average
non-crit tick of 2k)

lol - I don't doubt it. I haven't run into anyone outside my guild in
my pug heroics that were putting out that much yet. In my guild there
are two hunters - one that is putting out about as much as me, the other
about 1-2k higher...can't catch him. Funny thing, him and I go back a
way with trying to out-dps each other and in the last few months of ICC,
during the trash pull before marrowgar, if he'd get wrapped by a web, I
told everyone quietly before hand not to touch him and leave him in
there. The first time it happened he asked in vent "why?" and I said it
was the only way we'd out dps him, to which his reply was "pricks!"
lmao. :)

Is that Shadow Priest available for tutorials? :P I am struggling with
mine right now. Despite being hit-capped, despite visiting
shadowpriest.com and Max DPS, her DPS is terrible. I try the rotation
they suggest, and just . . . can't DPS. Now maybe regular dungeons
aren't the best place to judge DPS by (no flasks, trash mobs die too
fast for my DoTs to do a darn thing), but still.

Not that it really matters since I'm eventually going back to Holy,
just . . . it's puzzling to me.

well, your horde on my realm I think - I'd tell you, but you have to
come over from the dark side, 'cause right now you might literally kill
me sometime! lmao -

Seriously, trust me - we were talking about it in guild afterwards for
the 4 of us that were in that group. In fact, after the run we posted
the recount data into guild chat, and I said "hey, was that 17k the damn
shadow preist?!?" and one of the dk's who was in that run who has a SP
of his own, said solomly "<sigh> yes...yes it was - I'd like to know
what he was smoking besides the dps charts" :)

Below is my experience, which is quite limited, but for what it's worth:

Shadow Priest dps is quite rng based, particularly waiting for orbs to
proc. On my first raid the other night I watched at one point as my
empowered shadows buff ticked down ... and down ... and down ... and
still no orb. Eventually I had to refresh my dots without empowered
shadows and just wait till the next orb, which still took a while.

And as you note shadow priests struggle on trash in the presence of
other good dps.

I usually try and multi dot all mobs and then focus on the skull. In a
perfect world I shouldn't be doing this, I should be getting the skull
down asap, but then my dps really drops and potential for a kick looms.

I do quite well where it counts though, on bosses I have 12k+ usually.
On my first Argaloth fight I was at 13.5k dps but suspect that with my
gear I should be doing higher.

Want RNG based? Try a fire mage :S I have everything you can get in HC and
for JP, and rep and all my dps depends on crit... IF I crit over 40% or more
I can pull like 13-14k if I crit less I will pull like 8-9k and that is just
retarded.
I have 20% crit from gear + 5% from molten armor +5% from my spell debuff
+5% from druid/warrior/shammy aura and I still have loads of fights where I
have 20% crit rate at the end.
And to make it all even better most of my mastery is crit based too...
