OT - Vent Question

neithskye

2/4/2011 3:12:00 PM

Our guild recently changed our Vent password. Since then, I cannot get
into Vent.

What happens is basically Vent won't retain the changed password. I go
into Options. Our former password had six letters, so in this box are
six black circles. I type in the new password (12 letters, so 12 black
circles) and hit OK. If I then go back into Options - without touching
anything - there are six black circles in the password box again. No
matter what I do, it won't let me keep this new password.

Since I am an officer I also have Admin privileges on Vent, and
actually have a personal password. But, again, if I type that in, the
next time I go back into Options, it's reset back to our former six-
letter password.

I've tried creating a new profile with the new information, but -
again - even with a new profile, it resets the password back to the
original.

Enter new password, click Connect . . . please check username and
password. Open Options. Back to a six-letter password. Gah.

Any ideas?

Default
the password box will always display 8 dots no matter what length the
password is. this is an industry standard security practice.

before entering a new password make sure to delete anything currently in
the password box. then clik OK

if you still have problems then check with a server admin to have them
re-enter your password on the server side.

Hmm, maybe that's the problem? I can't remember if I deleted the old
password or just select-all, then typed over it.

Interesting that the password box will always display eight circles.
However, even if I go directly to Connect from entering in the new
password, it says it can't confirm my username and password. To make
sure I didn't make a typo I've tried the new password and my personal
password several times, and it still can't confirm my username and
password.

I am Admin so maybe I'll go to the site and reset my own password.
This is very frustrating.

Thanks.

Just to confirm: you *are* able to log in after retyping the password?

Does your server have a "generic" password that everyone uses, or are
you logging in with a password specific to your username?

No. I open up Vent, and go to Options (or Setup - not home to check)
where the server name, port, etc. info is. I change the password and
click OK. No matter how many times I do this, when I try to connect, I
get unable to verify username and password. I have been unable to
connect to Vent at all since the pasword reset.

Yes, a generic one, and I have a specific one because I am Admin. I
have tried both several times. I still can't connect.

If you have not been able to connect at all, then forgive me for suspecting
that you're using the wrong password.

Have other people been able to connect?

Yup, just fine. I've even gone so far as to copy and paste the new
password from our guild information section, and still no dice.

Is is possible that it's actually spelled wrong in the guild info section,
but the other guildmembers are automatically correcting it as they type?
(i.e. substituting a numeral one for a lowercase L, or something like that.)

Maybe the copy-and-paste is picking up unprintable characters?

Have you spoken with anyone else to independently confirm what the new
password is supposed to be?

Did you try deleting the password, clicking ok, then entering the new
password? That's how I ready the following:

> before entering a new password make sure to delete anything currently
> in the password box. then clik OK

Also, if I recall correctly there are two places to enter a password in
vent, hopefully you're using the correct one.

Could be. I'm the one who typed in the guild information box to begin
with. :-)

Yes, a fellow officer and Vent admin, as he was on the Vent Web site,
changing the password. :-) Also, when we raid and the new password is
given out in raid chat.

It could very well be that all I need to do is clear the field first.
I believe I may have just been typing over the old password.

Which brings me to the thread IYM linked, which said the password
field will always display eight dots. As I've said, if I go back to
Options after just entering in the new password, which has 12
characters in it, there are six dots in the password field, which is
how long our old password was. So the problem seems to be not that I
don't have the correct new password, but that Vent simply refuses to
retain the new password, and keeps switching back to the old one.

Do you know if anything other than the password was changed on the server?
(For example, an upgrade to a new version of the software?)
