totally off topic: use of slrn newsreader (in ubuntu 10.10

evanmac69

I apologize for off topic, but this is the only place where I have a
contact with people I saw use slrn (the last I saw was Urbin, can't
recall if there is any other)

so, here's the question: is there over the internet a clear tutorial on
how to learn to use this newsreader?

at this moment I'm using thunderbird (on linux, now I'm writing on the
mac), but I don't feel confortably; so I downloaded and installed slrn
to understand quite nothing about it works...

The documentation for SLRN is here:
http://slrn.sourceforge.net/document...

And beyond that, there is a very brief tutorial that summarises the most
important parts at

http://www.ece.ualberta.ca/~cwc/linux/Slrn%20news%20client%20tu...

Also, pressing ? shows a nice help screen.

Did you have any specific question/problem with slrn? Or are just lacking
familiarity while you are getting used to it?

Cheers

Just out of interest, what are you used to using? Is slrn at all similar
to what you're familiar with? Because after initial setup Thunderbird is
really intuitive.

I unserstand almost nothing at first time, I didn't realized that it is
a "command line" news reader, and most of all, I can't manage to insert
the NNTPSERVER variable enviroment using bash

I think that "dummy link" is the one I was looking for :D

on macos I ever used (and stil use it) "macsoup", on linux I started
using thunderbird, but it lacks more and more options that macsoup has,
so I said to myself "if I can't have the macsoup function, I should 'go
geek' and use slrn" ...

Just set it on the command line, then.

C:\> slrn --nntp news.individual.net

You can also set the username and password on the command line,
though I find it's easier to set those in slrn.rc.

It's not a "command line" reader, it's a "text only" reader, using the One
True Interface (tm).

I haven't used bash in more than a decade (I'm a tcsh man :) but I thinkg
set NNTPSERVER news.individual.net
export NNTPSERVER
in your .bashrc should do the trick

My .slrnrc file looks as follows:
-----8x---------------------------------------------------------
set realname "Urbin"
set signature "/home/bee/.Sig.wow"
set hostname "invalid.invalid"
set username "urbin"

nnrpaccess news.individual.net <myusername> <mypassword>
server news.individual.net .jnewsrc_individual

set scorefile "News/score"
set followup_string "On %d, %r wrote:"
set quote_string "> "
set editor_command joe
set query_next_article 0
set sorting_method 5
set query_read_group_cutoff 0
set unsubscribe_new_groups 0
set confirm_actions 0
set color_by_score 1
set no_backups 0
set non_Xbrowser "/sw/bin/lynx"
set use_metamail 0
set use_mime 0

group_display_format 0 "%F%-5u %n%45g%d"
header_display_format 0 "%F%-5l:[%12r]%t%s [%S]"
compatible_charsets ISO-8859-1,US-ASCII,utf-8

[snip stuff concerning colours]
-----8x-----------------------------------------------------------
Actually, it's one of several .slrnrc files I have, it is actually called
..slrnrc_wow

And then I have an alias to start it which looks as follows:

alias wow slrn -i .slrnrc_wow -h news.individual.net

Which lets me start it up by typing "wow" on the command line, I have
another setup which I use when posting to other groups where I use my real
name instead of my character name.

Hope this helps you get started.

Cheers
Urbin

my difficult is related with the shell (bash) not with slrn itself, I
found, copied and edited the slrn.rc file, but I can't realize hoe to
set this damned variable

In bash you'd could set it somewhere in .profile, perhaps with a
line like:

export NNTPSERVER=news.individual.net

And as I said, just typing it on the command line or putting it
in a shell script that starts slrn is acceptable.

I start using (and learning something about) the shell since year 2001
or so, when apple introduced macosx, and the default shell for terminal
was tcsh, with which I felt so many comfortable for so many years; then
steve jobs stated that bash would be better for users, so the default
shell became bash; knowing nothing about difference beetwen them I
started using bash, but... I felt more (and more (and more (and more)))
comfortably with tcsh, I remember so at least

maybe it's time to switch from bash to tcsh back :D
