Corborus Lag

C J Campbell

1/16/2011 6:34:00 AM

I hate this boss. It is not that he is hard; it is just that on my
MacBook Pro (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.93 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT), he
lags worse than Dalaran on a bad day with all my graphics set at max.

There is way too much animation going on with this worm. Consequently,
there is no way that I am going to dodge his numerous attacks and adds.
I am dead before I can move.

I asked Blizzard about this and their suggestion was to get a better computer.

I have same machine, now running linux, but with macos I didn't notice
any lag, did you try to set the graphics video setting at "fair"?

anyway I tried to play wow under wine (layer emulator for windows) and
it runs well

It seems to me that if the minimum requirements to run the game (and I
am well beyond those) are not enough, they should say so openly.

Hopefully a more thorough discussion with Blizz tech support will bring
me closer to a solution.

Or maybe I really do need that Mac Pro for my photography. :D

Have you tried the encounter with a stock UI (i.e. disabling all addons)?

Since patch 4.x I've had sporadic trouble running instances which I narrowed
down to ScrollingCombatText (SCT). At times it would work, at times I'd get
one frame every 4 seconds (and I'm not exagerating).

I have since switched to MikScrollingBattleText (name?) which I have seen
recommended here many times but never tried out because (a) SCT worked well
and (b) I didn't like the comic book style its screenshots showed.

Since (a) now failed, I took the time to try it and to configure it in a way
that looks more "serious" and I love it. Should have switched ages ago ;-)

It might not be nice, but it could be correct ;-)

On that, I agree.

Still, in my experience, if I had consistent lag problems and/or low frame
per second numbers it was usually an addon problem. Depending on the number
of addons you use this may be easier or harder to narrow down to a specific
one, but from your description it is probably something that has to do with
combat stuff so I'd start looking at DamageMeters, BossMods,
CombatLogParsers and stuff that is related to that before widening the
search.

It is unbelievable what strains photography puts on a computer :P

I've still got an issue with lag spikes that I've had for a while.
It's getting so that I don't want to do instances anymore in case I
cause a wipe due to the lag. :-(

I did some testing whilst killing Troggs in Deepholm yesterday (might
as well do some cloth farming whilst I'm at it :P). I tried with only
Macaroon switched on and it seemed to still be there. I tried with no
add-ons and seemed to go away but I'm not 100% sure because I did get
a lag spike during my tests. It could have been a random real lag
spike or it could have been some kind of natural variation that made
it seem like it was better when it wasn't.

Anyway, I'm going to replace Macaroon to see if that improves things
any. Macaroon is way too feature rich for my needs anyway (and some
bugs/missing features that it has wind me up no end).

I think that I'll try Dominos but I need to write an addon to move the
buttons on bar 1 before I can use it (my bar 1 absolutely needs to be
in the shape of my Belkin n52 controller or I can't remember which
button on the n52 activates which toolbar button)

I'm not a technical person, but I have noticed that in certain
instances, my FPS slows to almost nothing. This includes the hallway
leading up to Ozruk in Stonecore, and the hallways of adds in Grim
Batol.

It seems to be an issue with braziers or just a lof of fire on the
screen and, interestingly, it can be lessened somewhat my moving my
camera angle. It also happened exiting Bronjahm's room. If my camera
angel is level with the fire effects, my computer crawls. Tilting the
mouse so I was looking down helped a lot.

I'm not a computer person, and I just assumed it was my video card
unable to handle braziers/fire. Didn't occur to me that it might be
addons.

Ouch 1 gig RAM? Yeah, not at all surprised you've had problems then, I
had trouble with 1 gig in vanilla wow days (Ironforge was hilarious,
every time I tried to cross the bridge from the bank to auction house
I'd fall into that stupid trench because of the laaagggg lol), even
then upgrading to 2 gig was an immense improvement. And given the game
is a LOT bigger and more complex than it was 5+ years ago, anything
less than about 4 gig* is probably a bad idea nowadays.

*Yes, I know some operating systems can't handle over 3 gig, but 4 gig
tends to be less complex to aim at than 3 ;-)

Hehe, don't I know it.

> even then upgrading to 2 gig was an immense improvement.

Yupp, going from 1GB to 1.5GB back then was a major improvement. I'm afraid
that today's setup (Pentium D (dual core but one of the really old ones)
with 3GB and an older Geoforce vid card) is limited by the CPU, so even
upgrading the vid card won't do much good. Ah well, it's playable, even if
not great :)

You can manipulate dominoes so that bar1 is in the shape of your N52 by
simply choosing how many columns the bar has. This will cause the
buttons to "stack", allowing you to create a 12 button grid, emulating
the layout of keypad of the N52.

I'm not positive that this is what you need, but Its how I use my N52,
and it removes the issue of bar 1 transforming into something unusable
when you are placed on an interactive mount such as the ones in the
Malygos encounter... yet still retaining the layout of the device in
question.

I personally use the three leftmost buttons of the device as tab, shift,
and spacebar, allowing the 4x3 grid to their right to be set up to be
'1' through '-' on bar 1, and having '=' set to the thumb button above
the D-pad (I save this for my "Oh Crap!" spells)

I am not in front of WoW at the moment, but if memory serves me right I
believe this is done my right opening dominoes, going into the bar
configuration, and right (or right + shift) clicking on the bar in
question... then moving the columns slider.

best of luck.

I use the 3/7/8/9 keys as movement keys and the other 10 keys + the
thumb button to activate abilities. What I would need for the way I use
my n52 would be a 5x3 grid with four buttons missing leaving 11 buttons
in total.

I've written the addon to move bar 1 into the desired arrangement now
and that works perfectly for my needs.

Thanks all the same.

Oh, and now that I'm using Dominos.... it wasn't Macaroon that was
causing the issues after all. :)
