Questions about doing Heroic instances - beginner

John B. Matthews

Hi group

I am a very casual player, so even though I've been playing since
vanilla WoW I've been playing on and off, and not so much in instances.
I've never done a heroic dungeon, I believe the loot is better and the
mobs harder than normal - how much? Like would I be able to solo
Deadmines at heroic if I were a high level character - how high? And
how is heroics "turned on"?

I must say I am very much a solo player. Don't like the drama much :)
So my current Worgen rogue is great for this.

No. Heroic Deadmines is a level 85 dungeon, and requires a level 85 group.
Older dungeons can sometimes be soloed, though a lot of it depends on your
class as well. A mage will not typically be soloing level 80 heroics even at
level 85. Whereas there are level 85 paladins, death knights, and possibly
others who can solo almost every level 80 heroic.

Depends. For Wrath of the Lich King heroics, you just have to be level 80.
For Cataclysm, you pretty much need to have a certain gear level.

TBH, just about any class is great for soloing these days.

Aha, so the fact that the advised level for the normal Deadmines
dungeon is low (15 - 21 says Wowwiki) has nothing to do with the Heroic
setting at all?

Oh not a setting in the options then, but a certain requirement.

Well I just think Rogues is a bit faster levelling because the stealth
makes it easy to bypass unnecessary time consuming fights, to get to,
for instance bosses that are required for the quest.

Right click on your toon portrait and set dungeon difficulty to
"heroic".
Note that in order to access BC heroics you must purchase the
appropriate key from faction quartermasters.

No. When an expansion adds a heroic dungeon, it's for max level players. In
Wrath for example, Nexus was a lvl 70-73 dungeon, but heroic Nexus was still
for level 80's.

Except, the stealth slows you down to the point that while in the same
amount of time it takes you to creep past, another class could have just
killed whatever was in the way.

What Shiflet writes about is what conditions you must meet, to be able to
enter heroic dungeons (for completeness' sake: in BC at the start you had to
gain honoured reputation with the faction affiliated with the heroic dungeon
in order to buy the key to get in).

As to how to turn on/off whether you enter an instance in normal or heroic
mode: The party leader (or yourself if attempting to solo) should right
click on your portrait and there is one menu point where you can select the
mode of the instance. You should be able to tell what mode you are in by
looking at the instance portal, heroic mode portals show an image of a
ghostly skull. Also, near your minimap there is a flag (that indicates
whether you are in a guild group or not) that has a skull on it if you are
in a heroic instance.

I think it was Urbin <urbin@invalid.invalid> that wrote something
like...

Technically, at the start of TBC you had to be revered to get the key
to enter heroic versions of the instances. It got nerfed down to
Honored in a patch later on.

A thanks for correcting me. I thought it had been honoured and was then
dropped alltogether. My mistake.

In addition to what others have said, if your character is high enough level
to solo any particular instnace, then any drops you get from that instance will
most likely not be useful to you (other than the stuff you can sell in the AH).
