second try at a heroic instance

Urbin

So last night one of our two heroic able tanks logs in and asked for takers
on the daily random heroic. Four of us joined him "with concerns" as we had
not done heroics and weren't sure our gear and ability was up to it.

We decided to risk it and landed in heroic Stonecore. We wiped on the first
trash pack, we wiped on the second trash pack. By then we had figured out
our CC (stun and ice trap) and that the transformation into earth thingies
was interruptible and managed the next few trash groups easily.

Then we came to the first bosss. Boy did we wipe. Our tank had been there
before so we knew what to expect in theory. But that didn't help us. We
wiped and wiped, on our best attempt we took him to 73%.

None of his abilities on their own were an issue, but combined, we just
couldn't handle it. Those crystals he spits need to be taken down at
distance. I ended up not using any of my special abilities on the boss so
I'd have enough energy to multishot them (they take at least 2 if not 3 of
those to go down). The first one was ok, but those after his first dive
appeared so quickly that by the time I had downed the first crystal cluster,
the second one was being spit out by the boss already. In addition to that
was a load of those spider adds that appear during the dive phase which we
didn't manage to down, on one occasion they all took to the healer who died
on us, on other tries they just kept killing random group members. In
addition to that came the difficulty of the dive phase where some in our
group had trouble seeing the dust trail (might be their video settings, it
was easily visible for me).

In any case, the adds (spiders & crystals) - especially in the second phase
- kept us so busy we never did any damage to the boss after the first dive.

Were we just too underequipped for heroics (or for that heroic), or are we
too dumb to miss a really obvious strategy?

Cheers
Urbin, two heroic guild runs, two failures :-)

Lol, I remember that on my first stonecore heroic we managed to down
the boss but we wiped seconds after that due to adds.
So we run back in and the boss is there, dead and still unlooted, with
crystals still alive all around him.
I ask what to do, somebody replies "burn adds", so I go and lay a D&D
under them. The ensuing explosion must have hit me for like 2 million
HPs :D

As you have fugured out, the key is burning adds fast. Spiders bite
have a bleed effect but are quite easy to kill. I believe you have to
be prepared and lay an AoE as soon as the boss does Crystal Barrage
and kill them just as they form.
The hardest part for me has always been avoiding the boss when he's
underground.

Doesn't sound like you have the strategy wrong, so it might just be a
case of gearing up a bit to down the adds faster, or everyone making an
effort to help out on that. To be fair, that boss is tricky (until you
get it down, and then like everything it becomes less so). It took me
weeks to get this heroic done, just could not find a group who could
manage it. Finally this week I completed it with a four guildies from a
different server (as in, found them luckily through LFD).

Wait till you get to Ozruk, that's another one that causes frustrations.

That was probably one of our problems: Rogue, Shadow Priest and Hunter. Our
AoE abilities are not all that great :-)

Interestingly, I personally found that the least of my problems, though the
rest of thr group didn't.

Thanks, that is good to know.

That and bringing better AoE :-) Thanks for your feedback.

Don't scare me :-)
