Account hacked :/

nuts

1/14/2011 12:12:00 PM

heh, I never thought this could happen to me, I'm always extra careful
when it comes to PC security. This morning my bags were empty and I
had 30KG less. There was also a newly created charachter, don't know
what for. Curiously, they only took away things from my toons on
Hakkar, they didn't touch the ones on Saurfang. And they didn't steal
equipped gear, so I can at least run a dungeon until I get my stuff
back!

Guess I will need to get that authenticator after all.

I have been trying to buy an authenticator from the eu Blizzard store for
the last 4 weeks without success. They seem to be permanently sold out. I
emailed the store and they have just said keep visiting the store. I would
have thought having the authenticator in stock would be a priority for them,
but it doesn't seem to be that way.

You know you can also get the authenticator as a free app for your phone?
Well, depends on the model of phone you have, but it's worth checking the
list to see if yours is supported

If you have any number of different model phones, there are also apps
for some of them. I use an authenticator on my iPhone. It's free
rather than paying for a USB authenticator.

Hmmm..this would be a good solution if I had an up-to-date phone.
Unfortunately, my Motorola Pebl is just for making calls and sending text
messages. :o)

I would venture to say that nearly everyone who does not have an
authenticator has already had their account hacked, no matter how
careful they think they are with computers. The hacked accounts are
sold in large batches to gold sellers. If you think you are not hacked
and that your account is safe, the truth is that probably the hacker
has not sold your account yet or that the buyer has not gotten around
to using it yet.

I said a while ago that I have bought and authenticator, but changed my
mind about using it. The reason is, I'd prefer to know if my computer
was compromised.

I am unsure if this is the right decision, I can see it being very
annoying, but also trying to tell myself that it would be a good time to
quit WOW.

It might not be your computer that is compromised. It could just be
your wow account.

There are several mistakes that can be made to allow a wow account to
be compromised. For example, you could fall for a fishing scam*, you
could log in on an unsafe computer or you could re-use your battle.net
email address and password on a wow related web site that became
compromised.

Those are all I can think of right now but there may be more ways.

* Fishing scams don't just come in the easy to spot variety that ask
you to log in to a fake site. They might just ask for (seemingly
harmless and non wow related) personal information that could be used
to convince Blizzard that they are you and to reset your password.

I am a firm believer that blizzard employees and US Battlenet people sell
account names and emails. I have an email I use for WOW that is 50
character lengths long with screwed up combinations of letters and numbers.
I have never used it any where but for wow. I keep getting phishing emails
with my name in them. I also know several people that have done that also
that it is happened to also.

I have my computer well protected, daily scans etc. etc . My brother is a
security tech for the military and has me Very well setup. So I know it is
not me. But the authenticator is another level of security that I use.
