Why Americans love their guns

BBC News
February 17, 2016

In the US there are currently more guns than humans,
between 300m and 350m registered firearms.

Each year they are responsible for about 34,000 deaths.
Many of those are suicides, some are accidents, but that
still leaves approximately 14,000 homicides a year.

So what drives people to own guns?

BBC News visited Richmond, Virginia, and the Florida
Everglades to meet gun enthusiasts and get beneath the
surface of America's passion for arms.

Saw the video this AM, and it is fairly balanced reporting.
Worth watching.

Other than they seem to feel an inanimate object is responsible for the
actions of the person using it.

But, if their figure of 300-350 million registered firearms is correct, what is the total including
unregistered arms? Billions?

The total number of guns in the US is estimated in the neighborhood of
340-350 million. If you look at the ATf estimate of US guns in 1992 of
223 million, add in the imports and manufacturers reports you will
arrive at about 350 million today.

Their statement of "registered firearms" is incorrect. As you know, the
only person known to have had a particular firearm in most states is the
original purchaser. From there, who knows...... I believe that the
person in the video who referred to his guns as registered, IMHO, was
only referring to guns on the 4473 when he originally purchased them. YMMV

Yep, literally more guns than people .... and bet
the "estimate" is low - plenty of perfectly servicible
guns out there made from the late 1800s on that
were never on anyones radar. The Mauser (18)98
is still considered one of the best rifles in the world
and gazillions of guns by that company or using its
designs were made in every size and caliber. Even
the M-(18)95s are considered pretty good for medium-
power cartridges and there's another gazillion of
them around.

So, the idea of "eliminating guns" is absolutely
ridiculous. All it'd do is start a civil war and
for NOTHING.

If anyone wants to be productive they'll figure
out how to convince people that it's NOT a
proper thing to murder people over any little
disagreement. Of course that might include
just a little morality/ethics and the 'left' won't
stand for it ............

Figure another 350 million give or take .... and many
have been hoarding ammo since the 50s.

Americans, even many 'liberal' Americans, LOVE
their guns. Guns are "equalizers", a huge coked-up
biker can be put down by a ten year old girl. People
often have at least a small collection - several rifles,
several pistols. The zombies don't stand a chance.

"The problem" isn't the guns - it's the PEOPLE ...
people brought up with the lefty amorality program
who believe nobody and nothing deserves respect
if it gets in the way of what THEY want at the
moment. This was one of the greatest failures of
"liberalism" ... it was good at tearing down conventional
morality - but they had nothing tangible to REPLACE it
with except a few lame placitudes about "peace & love".

The better aspects of conventional religion-based
morality CAN be largely duplicated by the teaching
of secular empathy-based ETHICS .... but the left
was afraid that'd turn back into religious indoctrination
(and easily could) so they nixed that too.

And so we raised generations of monsters ... worse
with every iteration .............

We're getting into "generation Z" now - and they're
showing signs of being no more moral/ethical/just/sane
than zombies. Maybe 'Z' is appropriate ... the LAST
letter before you have to start over ..................

I whole-heartedly agree. Fifty years ago, guns were everywhere and easy to get. Sears-Roebuck,
Monkey Wards, the local hardware stores all sold guns, and they'd mail them to your front door if
you wanted.

The problem isn't guns, or easy access to guns, or types of guns available... the problem is people
who lack humanity.

They were mentioned in passing the ATF estimate when they stated that a
firearm had a life of well over a hundred years. They also stated that
there was no way to get an accurate estimate of how many remained.

The Mauser (18)98

I had an 1891 Mauser, 7.65 Argentine. $19.95 at Monkey Wards. I modified
the stock and free floated the barrel. It shot lights out. Biggest
difference between it and the 1898 is the 98 has a three lug bolt while
the 91 had a two lug.

My brother in law still has it and uses it every year for deer or elk.

Shit, when I was a kid we'd tie our rifles to our bikes
and tool on down to the dump to shoot rats and stuff.
If a cop car passed by they'd just wave ....

What a different scene it would be today huh ?

>The problem isn't guns, or easy access to guns, or
>types of guns available... the problem is people
>who lack humanity.

They were brought up not to have any - gets in
the way of ME-ism dontchaknow. Todays kid
thinks he's the center of the universe and can't
even cope with the slightest disagreement.
Since he's all that counts, well, SHOOT the
blasphemers !

Ben Franklin once wrote that, after observing how
his fellow citizens behaved, how he could only
imagine how much more horribly they'd behave
if they hadn't been indoctrinated with at least
some religion. He didn't seem to be concerned
so much about WHICH religion, just the morality,
the meta-view of things, most religions provided.

Well, "liberalism"/leftism will tolerate no authority or
truth above and beyond what the almighty State
finds convenient that day. So, they have worked
very hard to eliminate religion (well, the most
popular one here) and even general ethics. It's
all "cultural aggression" you see. But, as I said
before, they produced nothing of comparable
influence to REPLACE religion/ethics.

I dunno, maybe they WANT society to degrade into
chaos - hoping it'd give them their "in". (imho they'd
probably be the first ones up against the wall) Maybe
they just hate America SO much that they want to
kill it entirely. Maybe they believe their own shit and
really don't think the broad concept of "humanity"
has any value. In any case, they're getting exactly
what they've worked for - and pretend it's everyone
and everything elses fault.

Frankly, I think "Z" really IS the last letter. It's gonna
be followed by some really really BAD stuff before
we can start over at "A". Will the "American ideal"
survive it ? Maybe bits of it, maybe not enough bits,
hard to predict. Could be another thousand years
before somebody gets a great new idea about a
Land Of The Free .........
