Sometimes it is better to use this option, rather then flaming or
feeding trolls. Using it could lead to more constructive threads.

Just a thought,

You have too much faith in people using valid email addresses in the From:
field on Usenet.
That hasn't been a good idea since the invention of spam.

(Well, OK, technicaly the address I "post from" does still exist, but I
don't read it anymore...)

And sometimes, I feel, it is a good thing to publicly state why the
person behaving like a troll is behaving like a troll. I'm all for not
feeding the troll, but sometimes the bullshit just gets caked on a
bit thick, yah know?

Exactly.

I'm always saddened when a good, interesting discussion gets ruined by
trolling. Especially when the troll himself is someone who would have
a great deal of valuable stuff to add, if he just stopped being a dick
with a short fuse. If it was just a random guy, we can dismiss it. But
why someone who is an enthusiast like me would want to kill a thread
about what we both love, just because of some disagreement (or more
commonly a language-based misunderstanding), I'll never know.

My point exactly. The person in question has an immense knowledge and
experience of this game. The positive input that could be generated if
the topic in question is stuck to is immense.

Anyhoo, Teeka, it seems someone made us a fire, did you bring the

Oh btw, for anyone reading this:

Even though this thread was obviously created because of how Kevin
behaved himself in the current "changes" thread, by writing this I
don't mean to flame him or anyone else here, personally. The above
statement is a universal one (and it certainly applies to a way higher
precentage of posters on other forums I visit, Comic Book Resources
for instance).

You mean how I was AGAIN attacked by the same two trolls,
for being on-topic and talking to someone in a conversation that
had nothing to do with them? Those users have been assholes
to me for YEARS, and I won't allow their personal attacks on me.

Kevin, my only reply to you was that you had sworn. Been rude. Again.
First.
Please read the above not as an attack, but really as an honest
statement with no emotional content.
No one in that thread had responded to anybody else by descending to
the written equivalent of slinging mud.
Simple crude insults.
Why?
Rather have a conversation about what was asked. Changes in VtES.
NOT what is the exact specific definition of one little word that has
very little to do with the discussion every one else was having
regarding, you know, VtES...

No hard feelings, just feel it is unnecessary to swear or insult.
And if the ability of insult is the only repartee or reply you can
generate, might I be so kind as to ask you to not? Everyone on this
group is here because we love VtES. The fact that you come across
harshly, when you have valid points, is not due to the argument being
held, but the fact that you sidetrack along with someone else, and
when you are both reminded of it, there are generally two responses.
You seem to be unable to get beyond the playground method of sticking
your tongue out and shouting naughty words.
Please igonre the second last statement if you are able to make an
actual, reasoned reply as to why the question of please get back o
topic is such a harsh insult and problem to you?
just start a new thread, m'kay?

Happy New year to everyone as well.
May it be a year of bountiful VPs, numerous GWs, and the utter
annihilation of those other methuselahs who would play vtes with
you. ;)
And hey, if you some times get killed, so be it.

Please know that the following is just me trying to show you my view
of the matter, no flaming intended. I only write this for sake of
calm, civil argument.

The way I saw things happen, this post by you was the one that
actually first derailed the thread into flaming:

https://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/msg/13ba1e62b3d7...

You see, I for one didn't read the post you're replying to as an
attack on you, or anyone else. At all. I read its meaning as something
like:
"Guys, we're debating the defintion of 'fun' and 'enjoyable' now. It's
a semantics/philosophical exercise that I think isn't really getting
us anywhere, considering this topic*. So please let's get back to
discussing actual change proposals, as that was what this thread was
started for."

*Norm already pointed this out earlier.

Now, of course you can have the opinion that the 'fun/enjoyable
debate' is in fact contributing to the discussion. That's totally fine
(I for one agreed with the idea that it wasn't, but ok). Of course
Talonz could've also worded his post differently, sure.
But then you responded by saying "I'd like to see you start posting
instead of bitching, but that's probably too much to hope for.". I'm
sorry Kevin, but that was totally personal and not to mention, rude. I
could understand why Talonz then took offense and well, that's the
point when we have a flame war on our hands.

> Those users have been assholes

I'm sorry to hear that. I can understand that when you feel people are
regularly getting on your nerves, it can be quite bothersome. But as
said above, I honestly never saw anything in that thread that could be
seen as people being assholes towards you, until you reacted as such.

And let's be honest, you were making quite a number of little personal
attacks along the way yourself:
-I think you have a problem with your definitions.
-Learn to use a dictionary.
-whiny little bitches
-Learn to use a newsreader
-wrong as usual

Disagreement is fine. Thinking you are totally right about something
but someone else just fails to get it, still fine. But even if you are
100% right, it doesn't matter when you're being unfriendly cause
people stop listening when they take offense. And so much could be
reworded without losing its meaning, you know.
Unfortunately, at some point others then got sucked into this way of
conversing and eventually we reached F-word territory. Which I find
such a shame, as it was a great thread. I don't post much because I
don't have anything to add that often, but I love reading these
discussions.

Kevin, I really hope I succeeded in making my point without sounding
like a troll myself here. Again, in this case I'm referring and
answering to you, but I feel this way about all conversation (internet
or other) so it applies to everyone who might do this.
Let me end by admitting to having done this kinda stuff too in the
past, of which I'm not proud.

Happy new years, and let's have some great conversations about this
game we both love, in 2011.
