First Chance Qualifier? (TWD

The Lasombra

9/27/2010 7:14:00 PM

First Chance Qualifier
New Orleans, Louisiana
September 26, 2010
13 players
2R + F

This is a revised version of the original Broken Brujah he played in
2009:
http://www.thelasombra.com/decks/twd.htm#2k9...

The most important change was swapping the Vessels for Grooming the
Protege. Grooming is a big help since it`s both pool gain and crypt
accelerator. The other important change was focusing more on stealth,
so Bewitching Oration became Perfect Paragon and the combat module now
includes Resist Earth`s Grasp, which is also stealth. With this
version I can call my political actions at 3 stealth on a regular base
so I can get them pass any Second Tradition. I removed overkills from
the deck (4 Preternatural Strength + 4 Heroic Might was overkill).
Since the deck is now less focused on these potence actions Carlak
found his way into the crypt. Currently, I don`t see any need for
further modifications.

I didn't play against Martin in either of the preliminary rounds, and
my unfamiliarity with my deck led to my downfall and my absence from
the finals.

This is what I played.

Very well done sirs! Martin for being the only European to enter a
Final and Lasombra for the nice idea.
I like the idea allot. If you can't win them - join them.

And in the same table true Camarilla would probably win.
As God intended. :)

Are you going to the EC, mr Thompson?

Cheers!

Unfortunately, no, I will not be in Paris.
Work deadlines are too close to that date and I cannot be absent that
week.

That is too bad.
NAC and EC were too close, methinks.
Maybe something to improve in the future.

See NAC announcement up there somewhere.

I have to say, I think with one or two fixes in my play, I probably
should have gotten my prey in that final, but I don't think I would
have lasted in a heads-up against Martin. I was just too weakened
from holding off two speed-bleeders AND the backwards Shattering
Crescendo. Nice win, Martin. You definitely deserved it.

I know that some people were curious about my Group 5/6 Trujah deck,
so I will write it up to post later for discussion.

Nah don't bother. It's obviously not very good. Everyone knows G6 just don't
have enough other vampires to work with.... ;)

Thank you Eric!

Well heads-up against you would have been brutal! You have Kiss of
Lachesis against my weapons and I would have a hard time blocking you,
'cause you play with the 2 aggrevated before range combo. My only
chance would have been to Pentex you successfully. You played the only
deck I was afraid of, in that final.

Interestingly, I deal with weapons using Hard Case instead of Kiss of
Lachesis. It's a little more surprising that way. But if I'm
blocking you, I have to fear your additional strikes, so you were also
my one combat fear. It definitely would have been an interesting
endgame.

Forgive me Father for I have sinned...

I played the following filth in the First Chance Qualifier (and almost
certainly would have won it had I gone completely over to the Dark
Side and broken my deal with Kelly):

Deck Name: Superior Presents
Created By: Alex Broadhead
Description: Based on Robert Scythe`s deck(s) of the same name (and/or
same concept).

Adds: Intercept location(s)? Nocturn Theater? (Parthenon +)
Lillith`s Blessing?

Redesign comments: I will definitely switch out 1-2 Media Influence
for more Propaganda and/or Entrancement. Unholy Penance should be
more Catatonic Fear. Fame and one of the Major Boons should probably
be Misdirection. I'm not sure Port Authority is worth it but haven't
had it in play enough to make a real judgement.

Play comments: I have generally hated playing this deck and felt
filthy afterwards, but I was tired of sitting next to ANI and/or AUS
walls and getting my ass kicked, so I gave in to temptation. Now I
wish I'd done it during the LCQ instead, as I would probably have
managed to qualify with it...

The first game of the FCQ, I sat between John (prey) playing Ahrimanes
and Jeff (predator) playing the deck listed elsewhere in this thread.
On turn one, Jeff put down Last Stand and Bitter & Sweet, and I was
thinking, "I accept your wager!" Of course, then Corey's (I think it
was Corey?) Malks crosstable were the first beneficiaries when Jeff
decided that his predator, Mike Nudd, was not being cooperative enough
and had to go. It was a short game after that, though, which is to
say I got 1 GW + 4 VP and had a hand size of 11 in the endgame.

The second game, though, I sat as predator to Martin, who was
contesting decks crosstable with Brad Cashdollar, and thus had the
sympathy vote whenever he needed to Parity Shift me. (Well, OK, my
deck probably had something to do with the sympathy too.) Once he'd
gotten rid of Brad, my game was officially over, though bringing out
Jane (as my first vampire!) when my predator (Devin) was playing
Trophies didn't help either. I got squished for no VP and was feeling
bad about playing in the final when I knew Martin would be there as
well (as I figured he'd likely completely shut me down if I didn't get
him as prey and oust him in record time).

The twin promises of qualification and a T-shirt convinced me to play
and Martin sat as my predator. I'm glad I stayed, as it was a fairly
wild 'n' crazy table, with Andy (my prey, playing mid-cap DEM S&B) and
I racing to oust Eric before he could get his Trujah combat Death Star
fully armed and operational, Kelly (Martin's predator) trying to get
Martin as fast as possible, and Martin and Eric jockeying to not die
and figure out how to handle each other in the endgame. I got Andy by
the skin of my teeth and then Kelly's well-timed Shattering Crescendo
and follow-up diablerie attempts gave me Eric as well. I had agreed
to give Kelly two turns of no bleed (nothing else my deck can do, so a
pretty safe deal) to get Martin, and stuck to the deal, as I just
couldn't see winning the table to be worth completely screwing the guy
who gave me a completely unexpected second VP. Kelly gave it his best
shot, but Martin's Alastor'd Assault Rifle and Second Trads were too
much to get through, and his Parity Shifts against us both proved
lethal.

Well done, Martin! And thanks to all for suffering my sleaze in good
humor,
Alex
