Hilarious. I don't play Eve Online, so I'm not quite sure what this
means--he took a whole bunch of in game money. Does the in game money
translate into actual money somehow?

I heard about this. It was like that Maddoff (hope I wrote correctly).
The resources that guy took where the whole money and other valuables
of many, many players.
They ran a kind o ponsy scheem that, of course, was only for the guy
on the top have all the money from everybody.
Thousands of hours of game wasted for lots of people.

Oh, sure--I get that part. But the article seemed to indicate that
there was an actual monetary (USD) value to what he took. Can you
turn, like, in game currency into actual money somehow? Or use in game
currency to pay for your monthly subscription fee?

CCP allows the trading of Game-Time Codes for ingame currency and have, in
fact, added infrastructure to do exactly that in the game.

So, yes, indirectly ingame currency can be used to pay the subscription as
long as you can find someone that sells a Game time code.

Roughly 300 m ISK = $15 USD

The details are you spend $15 for an in game item, which can be
redeemed for 30 days of play time. You can sell these items on the
market, the going rate is about 300 million ISK

Best,

Equally cool story about theft in EVE. That these things are possible
in the game is a big part of what makes it very cool..
