According to my emails Kevin came up with the first build back in July
2009. Since then we have both reworked the crypt several times and
tried out lots of ideas and different percentages for the library.
With each new build we'd find a card that is just awesome for the deck
even though its normally not a very good card (example: Sheepdog and
Legend of the Leopard). We both settled on a core deck that is very
similar, but local metagame influences and personal preferences have
taken us in some slightly different directions. Some notable
differences are:

In Kevin's crypt he uses 1x Jackson Asher and 2x Anarch Converts
instead of the three 5 caps that I use. Frondator and Andrew Stuart
(his drawback rarely shows up in this deck) are ok, but Kevin really
needs to find room for Neighbor John. I personally dislike Anarch
Convert in a deck where you can't convert your main star, but I think
Kevin just brings him out as a 1-cap most of the time anyways.

Master differences include only 1x Pentex in my deck, since I'm not a
fan of the card for personal reasons (its a really good card, I just
make bad choices with it) and I play Wash when Kevin has switched back
to Sudden Reversal (even though Wash uses your Trifle for the turn,
I still like being able to play an Aye or regular master card after
canceling someone).

In the Action part of the deck Kevin prefers Ghoul Retainer and Ivory
Bow to my IR Goggles and Mark V. I kept seeing my Ghoul Retainer die
to long range combat or not always being worth the 2 pool, so
I swapped it out for something I can Magic of the Smith. Mark V vs
Ivory Bow is all metagame based on running into lots of prevent with
the Chicago playgroup. I also like knocking four blood off of someone
when Smiling Jack is in play.

Our Action Modifiers and Reactions are exactly the same except that
I run one more Eyes of Argus because I am running one less master.

Our final difference is that Kevin prefers 3x Pursuit while I like
3x Resist Earth's Grasp. I really like the option of being able to get
just a little more stealth into the deck and I am willing to pay the
one blood for it.

Some interesting other cards we tried in early builds are
Biothaumaturgic Experiment, Heroic Might, and Preternatural Strength,
but close range combat proved to be too dangerous and the deck had
problems in the build up stage (+3 stealth on Magic of the Smith makes
sure you can tool up). Theft of Vitae also was in the deck for awhile,
but it didn't seem to help the combat package enough for its space in
the deck.

This deck can really tool up and Cesewayo often ends the game with 5-8
(or more) permanent untaps in play. Like all tool up decks it suffers
from being vulnerable while tooling up and sometimes lets its prey run
away. I have found that the deck really needs to draw Smiling Jack
(and be in a position to defend it) at the right time or else the
table will time out. I think this deck is a lot of fun to play, but
I don't know how its opponents feel about going up against a fully
powered Cese. :)

One of the nicest aspects of this deck is that it doesn't rely on No
Secrets from the Magaji - if Cesewayo gets it and keeps it in play,
great, but that's not necessary to the tooling up or defending of
Smiling Jack. (Thus the inclusion of only one copy. It's too good not
to include, but that's not what the deck is focused on.)

That's certainly very dry. I would have liked to have seen some
demographics and exposition with this type of report.

Something that would have made me more jealous of the attendees and
more likely to want to attend in the future:

For Thursday morning's event, there were 24 players, including 10 Hall
of Fame members. They played a vicious two rounds leading up to a
stealth bleed dementation win by the indomitable Hugh Angseesing,
winning his 27th recorded V:EKN tournament, making him tied for the
2nd winningest player in V:EKN history (with Erik Torstensson, who
seems to have a win that didn't get reported correctly).

For Thursday evening's event, there were 28 players, including 2 more
Hall of Fame members than had been present in the morning. Hugh's
mastery of animalism and timing of a Singing Week of Nightmares
brought him up to win 28, placing him in sole possession of 2nd place
behind only Ben Peal, who has also used Origins to boost his
tournament winning record.

For Friday's US Championship event, 38 players crawled out of the
woodwork, including 2 from Canada, 2 from the UK, and the Michigan
contingent. Thirteen Hall of Fame members played in this event and
Jay Kristoff pulled off a win with amazing play. In one round, he
played all three copies of Judgment: Camarilla Segregation in his deck
to get two of them in play to oust his Giovanni/Shambling Hordes prey
after being decimated and nearly ousted by Matt Green's Spirit
Marionettes.

Between Friday and Saturday, only 3 players were lost to other events
at the sprawling Origins convention that had everything from
Battletech computer game surround pods to board games and role playing
games of every level and variety. John Eno played a variant of the
Neighbor John grinder with Ventrue justicars and princes for a deck
that is difficult to oust that also has great offensive potential when
a prey's weak spot is found.

On Sunday, 7 players were lost to early flights or other travel
requirements but there were still 28 players in attendance for Matt
Strehlow's long awaited return to the tournament winning deck archive
which he achieved with the undervalued Osebo Cesewayo and Smiling
Jack.

I can't imagine ever writing anything like this myself, but you did
an excellent job of it, wow! I will try to include some detail in the
future but I clearly do not have your skill at exposition.
