Powerbase: Los Angeles Event #4 (TWD

Robert Goudie

6/12/2010 9:31:00 PM

For the last PBLA event taking place on the evening of May 30th, we
had 10 players competing. Mike Courtois won the event with his newly
built Mistress Fanchion deck. Of all the games that took place this
weekend, this was the one where a casual observer would have had no
idea that players get VPs for ousting their prey. Someone please ship
us five T-Shirts with the PREY and Left Arrow reminder.

Other finalists:

Dennis Lien
Matt Wedge (Assamites)
Robert Goudie (Peter Bakija's Nosferatu Hate You, put together for and
with my son Cameron for learning purposes)
Fred Scott (Giovanni Powerbleed)

I came out of the gate quickly and sent my Predator Mike Courtois'
Mistress Fanchion to torpor but chose not to diablerize. Having dealt
with Wedge (Courtois' Predator) in a prior round heads-up, I was not
interested in speeding Wedge along too much. I was trying to walk a
fine line between keeping my predator down...but not out. Along with
Darby's Tupdogs (though certainly to a lesser degree) the Nosferatu
Hate You were was able to kill opposing players' minions at will.

Dennis built quickly while others beat on each other and Wedge was
suddenly feeling very pressured. Wedge gave a Giant's Blood to his
prey's Mistress Fanchion and then rescued her. I also rushed my grand-
prey Dennis and sent two or three of his minion's to torpor. Dennis
said he couldn't deal with all of us against him and started to
transfer out to Fred. Dennis' predator, Fred, rescued Dennis' vamps,
IIRC, or at least made some deal with Dennis. Even though Dennis was
transferring out, he seemed to be looking for a window to wiggle out
of it or to oust his prey before Fred got to him. Fred ousted Dennis
and then Courtois ousted me. Courtois then ousted Fred for his 2nd
VP. The higher seeded Wedge pressured Courtois and got incredibly
close to the oust--getting as close as calling a vote that would have
simultaneously ousted both remaining Methuselahs. Courtois blocked
the vote.

Deck Name: Mistress Fanchion doesn't have a Heart!
Created By: Matt Wedge & Michael Courtois
Description: The deck SHOULD have a Heart of Cheating but it was in
another deck and I forgot to add it before the tourney. Mistress must
get a Rutor's Hand first thing, then Alastor, then Helicopter, then
Magic
the Ankara Citadel. From there, there is enough in the deck to go in
and look for the answer that is needed to attack or defend the game
state. Orlando is always your second minion to help grab the political
reins at the table. If all goes well, you'll be the last one standing.

Heh--glad to see that sort of thing still can work and get you to the
finals. Why doesn't that ever happen when I play that deck?

Small tournament helps.

But as with every other dedicated combat deck I've played in
tournaments, creating the successful combats is the easy part. It's
usually the decision-making that is the hard part. All the cards in
hand to destroy something and will I select my predator, prey or
something else.
